Chapter Eighty-four: Global Film City
It was the last day of 1991, a black Audi sedan sped towards Universal Studios, Ryan sat in the back seat with a hint of fatigue between his eyebrows, Nicole gently massaged his forehead, her face showing an exceptionally clear look of heartache.
The script for "Jurassic Park" was handed over to Universal and Spielberg after Christmas, and the three parties exchanged dozens of calls in the following days, constantly exchanging views on the script.
The script naturally won't start from a little boy's perspective anymore. The male and female protagonists have returned to being Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler.
Because Ryan used the director's cut of the previous life, Spielberg was generally satisfied after making a few minor suggestions.
Despite the many conflicts between them, Universal Pictures gave Spielberg the greatest authority for the film's success. Not only did they invite his best partner Kathleen Kennedy as the production manager, but also followed his opinion in choosing actors.
Spielberg also showed ultra-high efficiency, and in just a few days, he confirmed the first main actor, unexpectedly Nicole Kidman, who played Dr. Ellie Sattler, because of Ryan's work, Nicole agreed without hesitation.
To be honest, Ryan didn't want Nicole to take this role, whether it was the male lead or female lead, in the movie they all had to stand aside, the protagonist of "Jurassic Park" is only one, that ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex, then after counting down, that would be Velociraptor, and only then could it be the actors' turn.
However, since Nicole has made up her mind, he didn't plan to intervene either. Besides, this film can add a fairly glorious resume for her.
Perhaps it was habit, or perhaps it was nostalgia for the warmth of childhood, but before he knew it, Ryan had burrowed into Nicole's embrace. The Australian girl furrowed her brow, but said nothing, continuing to rub his temples.
"Ryan, you should give me a raise." Jin Silie sat in the passenger seat, looking visibly tired.
"Alright, Pat, I'll add a hundred bucks every month, how's that for generosity?" Ryan made a face like he was bleeding profusely.
Patty Carsey flashed a radiant smile, her request for a raise was naturally in jest. As a member of the top 10%, even with only two names under hers, who didn't know that she was already one of Hollywood's highest-paid agents?
"Thanks Pete, after New Year's you can go on vacation."
Ryan was well aware that for more than half a year, Jin Silie had hardly rested, and it was said that due to her busy work schedule, she had also parted ways with her boyfriend.
Her ability is indeed impressive, in September, she personally flew to Taiwan, borrowed Warner's connections there, and successfully obtained the film adaptation rights of Wang Du Lu's book. Later, she worked with the entire team to run around North America, fully promoting Ryan's list, obtaining the adaptation rights of many works on it, especially those specified by Ryan.
"Bernie's Identity", "Interview with the Vampire" and "Catch Me If You Can: The True Story of a Fantastical Imposter" aside, she also managed to secure the film rights for "Forrest Gump" while setting up a contractual trap that would allow her to push out the original author Winston Groom and adapt it solo.
This was in line with Ryan's intentions, as Winston Groom had been quite vocal during the screenplay writing process about wanting to make the film a political satire, which Ryan did not want to deal with.
An Audi drove into the office area of Universal Studios, led by Goldie Hawn, Ryan and others soon arrived at a reception room. They were late, when they entered, Spielberg, George Lucas and Ron Meyer were discussing something.
Pre-production and filming of the movie will be handled by Kathleen Kennedy and Spielberg, with Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic handling visual effects. Casting is currently only confirmed for Nicole Kidman.
"The main characters in the movie are dinosaurs, and all the plots are centered around them. So I only took less than 20% of the content. The audience doesn't want to see the origin of the dinosaurs or what cloning technology is, they want to see the conflict between humans and these prehistoric giants."
"I agree with Ryan," Spielberg said, closing the script and rubbing his eyes. "If the dinosaurs don't work, this movie is a failure no matter how good the story is."
George Lucas flipped through the setting drafts and suddenly said, "Ryan, the appearance of Velociraptor is a bit different from that restored by paleontologists?"
"Yes." Ryan nodded and stood up from the chair, "Actually, Velociraptor is much smaller than the one in the script. In order to enhance the visual effect, I borrowed more from Deinonychus for its appearance."
He paused for a moment, then said, "What the audience wants to see is a vivid and lifelike dinosaur. Whether it conforms to scientific theories or not, no one will care about that. We are making a science fiction film, not a popular science educational film."
"Alright, I have no objection." George Lucas thought for a moment and said, "Stan Winston and Phil Tippett will be in charge of the electronic dinosaurs and dynamic dinosaurs in the matte paintings. Industrial Light & Magic will use the latest film special effects technology in this movie."
"George, I have a suggestion," Ryan pinched his chin, "Although I've drawn out some setting drafts, my understanding of dinosaurs is limited after all. It's best to invite a paleontological expert to be in charge of supervising the design work for the dinosaurs."
Everyone else nodded in agreement, after all, what they were trying to create was a prehistoric giant beast, not some kind of alien monster.
"We are currently negotiating with several manufacturers, there will be a few product placements in the film. If negotiations are successful, the script may need to be tweaked slightly." Ron Meyer looked at Ryan.
"I have no problem." Ryan nodded, these are all minor details.
The other two also had no objections, and product placement has long become a part of film culture.
"The crew side Kate will rush to prepare, the location selection will start after New Year's Day, and it is expected that the pre-production work of the film will take 20-30 weeks." Apparently, Spielberg and Lucas have exchanged views, and the given schedule is very tight.
His words seemed to have another meaning, furrowed his brow and then spoke, "Ron, I still hope to shoot Schindler's list first, my part of the team has gone to Krakow, done a lot of preliminary work, twenty weeks is enough for me, after completion I can enter into the shooting of Jurassic Park."
"Steven..." Ron Meyer's face showed a difficult expression, now that there were many people present, he wanted to give the other party some face, and slightly shook his head.
Ryan didn't want to get involved in these things at this stage, seeing the topic shift, he casually found an excuse and left with Nicole and Kimberly.
"I'm going to the bathroom." Rye waved at the two and turned around the corner, walking into the restroom.
Out of the men's restroom, after washing his hands at the sink, Ryan lowered his head to pick off a small piece of paper from his clothes. At the same time, he turned around and prepared to leave, but unexpectedly bumped into something soft. Then, a girl's surprised cry of "Ah" came from in front of him.
"Sorry, I didn't see you!" After all, it was his own fault. Moreover, he felt that the other person also knew where they had collided with him. Without even lifting his head to clearly see who the other person was, he apologized.
"Hey, it's you!"
"Do you know him?" another female voice asked.
"Ryan Jenkins! Gwendolyn, don't tell me you don't know him."
The girl who was speaking had a slightly chubby doll-like face, a bit taller than him, looking about fifteen or sixteen years old, with a very hot figure. As for the other one, although I haven't seen her in this life, I've seen her countless times in my past life.
It was just Ryan who never thought that his casual collision would actually meet Spielberg's two apprentices.
"Hello, Miss Barrymore and Miss Patro! If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave." Ryan didn't want to get entangled with them, one was okay, but Drew's reputation was really too bad.
"Hey, you bumped into me and think you can just walk away? No way, Gwendolyn, help me stop him!" Drew stepped in front of him.
Ryan couldn't help but furrow his brow, feeling like he was being haunted by the fallen girls of Hollywood, first Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, and now Drew Barrymore.
"Hey handsome boy, you're not bad-looking at all. When you grow up a bit more, you'll be able to charm a bunch of girls." Drew smiled and playfully stretched out one finger to poke at his chin.
"Miss Barrymore, be careful!" Ryan warned quietly.
"Alright Drew, don't be too full of yourself!" Gwendolyn Patrell intervened.
"Gwen, don't interfere, I have my own measure."
As he spoke, Drew Barrymore approached with a few aggressive steps, Ryan had no choice but to slowly back away until he reached the edge of the pool, where there was nowhere else to retreat.
Drew Barrymore flashed a somewhat evil and somewhat frivolous smile, "Little handsome guy, have you ever been kissed? Want to try?"
As she spoke, those bright red lips pressed down on hers.
Ryan didn't want to give his first kiss in this life to this ** girl, he stretched out one hand and unhesitatingly pushed that doll-like face away, but Drew seemed to be addicted to it, actually putting one hand on his chest and sliding down.
Seeing that hand about to grab his vitals, Ryan muttered a low curse and tried to push her away again, only to have this guy grab hold of his belt and deftly reach for the buckle.
"What the hell is going on?! Ryan was furious, never in his two lifetimes had he been toyed with like this. In a fit of rage, one hand grabbed Drew's arm while the other hand exerted force, subconsciously using the German suplex George had taught him."
"Whoosh" "Clang"
Drew Barrymore was thrown directly to the ground by the side of the pool, fortunately Ryan didn't use too much force, but even so, it hurt him to tears.
"Ah~" Gwyneth Paltrow let out a scream.
Her cry was not loud, but it completely broke the peace in the building. People from several nearby offices thought something big had happened and rushed out.
