Chapter 253 – Curious

Sophia did not hold back when introducing herself to Luca, and told him a lot of her magic, her domain, and various other things, including having him meet Aura and Kel. Naturally, all of this completely fried his brain, and accidentally running into Mira, as well, didn’t necessarily help, either. To have him relax a little, Sophia suggested returning to the capital for the time being, so he could reunite with his parents.

"Ohh, rather toasty around here." Mira went to the beach in Sophia's domain, where the tiger and Maya introduced Luca to Aura and Kel. Contrary to before, everything had been on fire now, though. The area around the portal was still mostly safe, but everything in the distance, even the ocean, was covered in flames.

“Mira!” Aura, in her big form, suddenly landed next to her with enough force to create a sizeable crater in the sand around her. The very tip of the wolf’s tail was on fire as well.

“Having fun?” The overseer walked over to her and extinguished the fire on her tail by pinching it out with her fingers. “The dragon hunter is back, huh?” She then glanced at the ocean, where Kel’s massive head was looming over the flames with a few charred markings on his scales here and there.

"Absolutely!" She nodded in Mira's direction. “Kel’s a great sparring partner.”

  “I can see that~.”

“I can only return that compliment.” The dragon got rid of most of the flames with a healthy helping of wind magic before coming closer to the shore. “It’s rare to have someone to fight with who is close to my level, so this is rather enjoyable.”

“Glad to see you being so active after your little nap.” Mira looked at him. “Still as sparkly as ever, huh?”

“Sure am~.” He had long embraced looking fabulous. “It has been a while, hasn’t it?”

“It has.” The overseer agreed with him. “It was a busy time.

“Speaking of busy, congratulations on the child." Kel changed the topic for a moment. "I didn't know Overseers could have children. I've met her a couple of times now, and she seems well-raised.”

“She’s an absolute blessing.” Mira smiled at him. “Overseers can’t have children with each other, but my beloved Fey and I are unaffected by this rule. It is, admittedly, quite rare, so your surprise is understandable.”

“Is that how it is? I see.” He reacted with a slight nod of his massive head. “Anyway, a lovely girl. Way less chaotic than the blonde menace, too.”

“Thank you very much~.” The fox was very happy about her daughter being praised. “Sophia is a fun one, isn’t she?”

“That’s putting it lightly.” Kel and Aura had the same reply.

“What do you think of her?” The fox got a little curious as she kept looking at him.

“As in how she’s making herself as your little overseer in training?” The dragon focused his eyes on her.

“She isn’t my overseer in training.” Mira lightly shook her head.

“Right, I forgot… Canir’s the one who gave her the magic she has.” Kel corrected himself while sounding rather monotone about it.

"I knew it!" Aura suddenly raised her voice. "I knew that Sohpia was way too eccentric for a normal being! That side of hers definitely is just like any other overseer!”

“Is there anything you want to tell me, dear?” The fox changed her attention to the wolf.

"Yes, all of you overseers are uber eccentric!" She wasn't the slightest bit intimidated by her stare.

“She does have a point there.” Kel sided with his sparring partner.

“The levels of slander I’m receiving here are off the charts.”

“That’s exactly what Sophia would say, too!” It was only further evidence for Aura.

“I can see how that didn’t help the case.” Mira scratched her cheek. “Well, yes, her personality is a good fit for us overseers.” She couldn’t deny it. “Admittedly, she’s the closest being in our world to becoming the next overseer, but that doesn't mean she's close. Sure, she already has unlocked many of our party tricks, but most of them are still in an immature state. This domain, for example. It’s fairly barebones as she simply has nowhere near enough magic to properly sustain it. Then again, to be fair, the state it is in already is impressive to say the least.”

“Sophia is pretty upset about the last part.” Aura let out a small chuckle. “Us constantly teasing her about the white sky definitely has nothing to do with it, either.”

“In her defense, putting a working sky, not a painted one, just in the area we’re in right now, will cost Sophia way more raw magic than both of you combined have used in the form of authority in your entire lifetime.”

“Hah.” Hearing that, the two got speechless.

"A domain like this usually is the end goal of an overseer.” Mira smiled at them. “We all were shocked when we learned that Canir’s chaos tiger unlocked hers already. Big C included. It likely was him being careless with his blessings, he at least claims to have been careless, which many of us doubt, combined with our Sophia being creative when it comes to doing things.”

  “That definitely sounds like Canir.”

“And Sophia.” Kel and Aura didn’t seem the slightest bit surprised.

“Her utter lack of power still clearly separates her from us official overseers.” The fox scratched her cheek. “Yes, she is strong, but in the grand scheme of things, her magic power is, uhh…” She tried to come up with a comparison. "If you’d compare my power with this beach, a sole grain of sand would have more magic than Sophia.”

“The power creep is way too insane!” Kel got loud.

“What he said!” The wolf enthusiastically nodded her head.

“Well, that’s how it is.” Mira just shrugged. “We are talking about overseers, after all. It’s not an everyday occurrence to become one.

“Fair.” The two couldn’t really say much there.

“Her growth is fascinating, though." The fox paused for a moment while seemingly thinking about her next words. “She’s growing so fast and intensely that it's affecting everyone in her domain, meaning you all." Mira glanced at the two. “Everyone except her will be limited by the rules of magic, my rules, in the regular world, but Sophia will just keep growing and growing. It will be an exponential growth, too. The more magic she amasses, the faster she will grow.”

“How limited are we exactly?” The dragon got a little selfish.

“You won’t be able to cause significant harm to the world, but you also won’t have any desire to complain.” She smirked at the sparkly dragon. “Most importantly, you’ll be able to use magic for much longer before you run out of authority.”

“I like the sound of that!”

“For the first time in forever, there will be a new general rule for magic in the regular world, though.” The overseer got slightly more serious. “Many of you either already are or will soon grow beyond the natural limit of magic power. It was already a rule that you can't use magic stronger than the limit, so, as I said, it will mostly enable you to use magic for longer. Now, especially as a known rulebreaker is part of the problem, there will be a limit on how much raw magic can be in a specific area. I just know that some of you would try to release all of your internal magic and try to activate it all at once that way.” She looked at the dragon at the end.

“Good call.” Kel’s voice was filled with smugness. “Too bad, though.”

“It would kill you. Full stop.” Mira stared at him. “The limit is not a no fun allowed barrier, but a don't instantly die and take half the world with you barrier, because the planet can’t take so much condensed magic. The new rule would make it so that magic only activates when the ambient magic is below a certain threshold.”

  “Ah.”

“Feel free to ask Sophia and Fen what happened when they tried it, and how they and the regular world only still exist because Canir intervened.”

“Canir intervened on something?!” Kel got loud.

  “Yup.”

“Wow…” He paused for a moment. “I’ll be content with enjoying my extra powers to use magic for longer! Though, I could still use bigger magic that is not as strong, right? Like, a massive fireball with thinly stretched raw magic in the area. After all, I like being flashy, and now my flashiness could get bigger?”

“Yes,” She nodded. “The rule is about destruction, not flashiness.”

“AWESOME!” He was okay with that.

“By the way, the more you help her grow her domain and donate raw magic, the stronger she becomes, and the more excess magic will be available to boost you.” Mira completely dropped the topic and smirked at the dragon.

“Well,” He then gestured behind him. “The entirety of this ocean has been created by me, and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. Sophia also told me that the more I use my magic in here, the faster my powers will grow. I’ve been rarely as motivated about anything since learning that.”

“Hehe.” The overseer liked his enthusiasm.

“I can’t wait to go on a dragon hunt marathon unlike any I did before, once we’re back on the demon continent~.” Aura was also looking forward to becoming stronger.

“Please try not to turn Kel into an endangered species, okay?” Mira had a bad feeling about this.

“I can try, but I can make no promises~.” Aura’s voice turned cheeky.

“Well, you should be relatively equally matched to the Kel here, so you shouldn't be able to completely overpower the other elder dragons, either. They won’t go extinct that way, at least.”

“They’re all significantly weaker than me, so it could still be an issue.” The dragon sounded incredibly smug while replying to the overseer.

“Are they now?” Mira looked back at him with a smirk on her lips. “Do you really think you’re the only creative dragon around?”

  “…”

“Elder dragon…?” Aura tilted her head in confusion. “Who and or what is that?”

“Each elemental dragon group, and a few more, has an elder dragon who rules over them. Fire dragons, earth dragons, air dragons, and so on. Our dear Kelkel here is the elder dragon of all water dragons.” The fox smiled at her. “Or to put it in wolf terms for you, he's the sole alpha of them. Well, more or less, at least.”

“Wait, are you telling me that there are a bunch of super alpha dragons for each type?” The wolf’s eyes were sparkling.

"A low double digit of them, yes.” The overseer nodded. “It’s not just the main elements, but also more specialized ones like lightning or poison dragons."

“I need the location of every single one of them!” Aura sounded incredibly excited. “My new goal is to have a match with every single one of them!”

“I’m actually surprised you haven’t met any of them besides Kel yet.” Mira tilted her head while looking at her. “After all, most of them live on the demon continent.”

“I have never even heard about elder dragons before!” She shook her head.

“Really? I was pretty sure they’re common knowledge on the demon continent.”

“Definitely not!” Aura’s head shaking got even stronger. “The royal demon family would’ve told me! I even asked them about stronger dragons back then!”

“Hah.” Mira froze for a moment while looking a little awkward. “How about we go and pretend that I never told you about this?”

  “Ehh?”

“Did someone spill a bit too much?” Kel easily saw through her.

“I suggest you ask Neri about details~.” The fox then just smiled at Aura. “Magic or not, those dragons are called forces of nature, after all. Let her be the messenger.”

“Neri?” The wolf paused for a moment. “As in Nerima? Like, the Overseer of nature?”

  “That very one.” She nodded.

“Ohh, I haven’t seen her in ages.” The dragon sounded a little nostalgic.

“It’s been ages, indeed!” Aura felt the same as him.

“You’ll probably meet her again relatively soon.” Mira gave both thumbs-up.

“Why?” The wolf tilted her head.

“She wants to meet Sophia.” She got right to the point. “Neri’s been curious about her ever since Canir showed us a few things about her. Though, lately, after Sophia started borrowing pieces of nature all over the place for her domain, she really wanted to meet her to see what she’s up to.”

“Oh, that is going to be fun!” Aura’s voice turned playful.

“Yes, I’m also looking forward to it~.” Mira agreed with her. “It’s going to be even more fun if we don’t tell Sophia about it and let Neri surprise her.”

  “Ohh!” She liked that idea.

Once they had agreed on that, the trio chatted a little more about all sorts of things. Kel tried to get more info on how he could grow the most in the shortest amount of time, and Aura wanted to get the locations of the elder dragons out of Mira, but the overseer managed to stay strong.
