In a different timeline from our own, vigilantism was never illegalized in the U.S.A. On this alternate Earth, those vigilantes took to adopting secret identities maintained by costumes. This choice on their part resulted in the vigilantes being nicknamed Masks by popular culture. Whereas costumed criminals came to be called Crooks.
