Story 2

  As the Clock Strikes 12

Machines hooked up left and right, 11:30 and sleep has yet to reach me. It has been 5 months, 5 months of nothing, a blank wall, ceiling, all white and aseptic. Beeping day and night, the rhythm stuck in my head. Beeping day and night, filling the room with sound, scaring away the bliss of sleep.

When will it stop, when will it allow me to…

11:40 the beep turned into a hum, all cold and flat, draining the silence of the room. 11:45 footsteps, more and more footsteps, shouts all around. They won’t leave me be. Pushing, against my chest, rhythmic motion, all I feel is a weight in my chest. They won’t let me sleep, I wish it would stop. There is no resistance in my chest, the lights flicker. Darkness engulfs the room slowly extinguishing the light. The hum slowly fades away…

  “Time?”

  “11:59”

Then the world faded to black, sleep has taken me.
