Chapter 18 Death Flag

The Fremen had seen desert storms that buried cities. They had seen worms breach the sand like living mountains. But none of them had ever seen anything like this. Not in living memory. Not in the stories of their oldest Naibs.

The sky above Arrakeen was on fire.

  Quite literally.

It was like several mini suns lighting up the night sky.

Stilgar y on the sand, his bright blue eyes observing the destruction taking pce.

Hundreds of warships filled the sky.

Missiles streaked through the darkness like burning spears.

Two forces considered the strongest battled for air supremacy. Ornithopters were weaving past missiles through the sky as they shot back leaving long streaks of explosions. Some still managed to hit the Ornithopters however.

On the eastern edge. Away from the worst of it.

Drop ships descending fast and low, nding hard on the outskirts. Ramps dropping. Harkonnen soldiers flooded out into the dark streets, moving quickly and confidently into the city.

"Move! Move! Move!" A commander shouted as they marched into Arrakeen with their weapons loaded and ready to fire.

A soldier hidden within a tall compound watched as the Harkonnen soldiers rapidly disembarked in rge waves.

"Commander Gurney, they have boots on the ground!" The soldier excimed over all of the noise.

"Report received." Gurney's voice came through, "Hold position, use gas grenades when they enter range. Incapacitate and capture." Gurney ordered.

"Yes sir" the man muttered before he reached to his waist and grabbed a gas mask and put it on his face.

Soldiers all over the eastern part of Arrakeen followed suit as they donned bck gas masks.

Inside the command room, Leto watched the entire battlefield situation unfold.

"Sire, their dropships have nded. We are clear to switch on the barrier. We await your command," Thufir said.

  Leto was quiet.

His eyes were observing everything that was happening on the screen.

His mind racing as he gnced at the fgship of the Harkonnens.

  "The fgship," Leto muttered.

"Sire, it is staying out of our range. We are unable to do anything to it, we must activate the barriers now to prevent any more losses," Thufir urged.

  Leto went silent again.

Just a few moments had passed before Leto spoke up, "Prepare a frigate, We must use this chance to get rid of scum like Baron Harkonnen without mercy."

Jack's eyes widened as he slowly looked toward Duke Leto.

'Just now... Was that a death fg...'

Jack felt his heart speed up.

Taking a step towards Leto he quickly spoke, "There is no need, with boots on ground we have more than enough to prove the attack and involvement of Sardaukars." Jack muttered, his voice tinged with a hint of desperation, something Leto picked up.

"That may be the case, however, this opportunity shall not come again" Leto said. "I am going to finish Baron off myself" Leto said.

Gurney reacted at this moment, "Sire, I cannot allow you to put yourself in such danger. Allow me to take on this task," Gurney said.

"Enough!" Leto shouted, his jaw tightened as something old surfaced in his mind.

He had been seven years old. Standing in a corridor of Castle Cadan while servants whispered around him. Nobody would look him in the eye that day.

His father had gone to fight a bull. He never came home.

The Baron had arranged it. Everyone knew, but nobody could prove it.

Leto had been waiting thirty years for a chance.

A chance to deliver justice with his own hands.

Give rest to his te father's soul.

Now the chance was staring him right in the face.

Leto quickly took a deep breath to calm himself, his eyes shut.

A few seconds quickly passed before he opened his eyes.

"I will end Vdimir with my own hands," Leto muttered in a much calmer tone.

Jessica gnced at him with a complicated look in her eyes.

She wanted to say something, but couldn't bring herself to say it, she felt something deep within her restricting her from speaking at the moment. She couldn't fight back against it, so she just kept silent.

Jack subtly gnced at Jessica's conflicted eyes, 'Must be tough, she is trapped by her own knowledge' he thought to himself.

"My lord, I will deliver the Baron to you so you may personally deal with him, allow me to go," Gurney said as he knelt on one knee.

  Thufir was silent, observing everything.

His eyes gncing towards the screen as his eyes fshed white for a moment before he spoke.

"Sire, the fgship is getting closer. We must act promptly and switch on the shield. Once it breaches, Arrakeen will face major destruction to its spice infrastructure. We must act swiftly."

  Leto hesitated.

He gnced at Jack and was silent for a while.

'Paul... he is desperate to have me stay... could he know something he isn't telling me about?'

  '...'

Leto mulled it over for a moment before he gnced at Gurney.

"Very well, take charge," Leto ordered the kneeling Gurney.

"Bring me Vdimir," he said, his tone a little venomous mentioning the Baron's name.

"I shall not disappoint," Gurney solemnly said as he stood up.

Gurney turned and walked out. The door clicked shut behind him. Jack's eyes drifted back to the screens, but his mind was elsewhere. 'Stay safe old man.'

On the battlefield of the Eastern Front.

Harkonnen and Sardaukar soldiers began rushing into Arrakeen, they began to carefully move through the alleys expecting gunfire, but they were not attacked even once, it was silent.

No Atreides soldiers were waiting to jump out and attack.

  It was empty.

Thousands quietly marched through the alleys, explosions off in the distance still persistently occurring.

  Hyper aware of their surroundings.

All of a sudden, one of the Harkonnen soldiers heard a very silent yet barely perceptible clink near him.

  He wasn't alone however.

A few soldiers close to him also heard it.

Gncing down to the ground for a moment realization came a second too te.

"Grenade!" One of the men shouted before the grenade exploded, bursting out a purple mist dust cloud filling the entire alleyway almost immediately.

All over the eastern district, scenes like this occurred as rge dust clouds of purple mist rose up into the air, almost filling the entire eastern district.

Harkonnen soldiers who breathed in just a hint of mist felt their bodies weaken as they dropped to the ground.

"It's poison wear gas masks!" Loud shouts of orders quickly resounded as they tried to immediately adapt.

  "Poison?" Baron Harkonnen muttered

On the ground, Atreides soldiers got out of their hidden spots. There weren't many soldiers, but the ones that were there all had a high vantage point over the Harkonnen soldiers.

"Begin clean up," Leto's voice came through the earpiece of the soldiers.

They quickly drew their stun weapons and began aiming towards the Harkonnen soldiers who had managed to put on gas masks quickly enough.

  Non-lethal rounds rained down.

Harkonnen and Sardaukar soldiers colpsed one after another, unable to even figure out where the attacks were coming from due to the ck of visibility.
