Chop, chop, chop. The sound of her knife cutting through carrot and hitting the polished, hardwood board was the only thing to pierce the peaceful silence.
Adelaide had her bowls and ingredients laid out on a large, shinny, solid marble kitchen counter. It was VERY expensive, just like everything else in her boyfriend's rather extravagant home. More of a mansion, really.
Adelaide loved the extravagance. She loved the classy restaurants he took her to. Loved the new handbag he had bought her. $1,500. She just wished he allowed her to buy something without having to ask him first. Then again, she would never have been able to afford the things he bought her, back when she worked in her old country town. Back when she worked. Before she met him.
She took a deep breath of the calm air, savoring the tranquility. Out the open window she could see the slightly wet flowers and bushes she had attended to yesterday. The honey-like smell of Banksias intermingling with the scent of wet grass was always soothing. Chop, chop, chop.
Adelaide heard the screech of tires pierce the silence and the sounds of a car pulling into the driveway. She began to chop faster, glancing at the clock. 5:03. He was early.
The sound of the front door swinging open thunderously had her involuntary hunching over. “I'm sorry honey, dinner isn't quite ready yet.” She turned and saw her boyfriend march into the room. She swallowed thickly as he aggressively marched up to her. He backhanded her across the face and she stumbled backwards. “I'm sorry, honey, I'm sorry!” She cried, backing away from him.
“Sorry isn't good enough!” He practically screamed, stalking after her, Adalaide stared in terror at the murderous intent in his eyes “I've just been demoted at work and I come home and dinner isn't on my table.”

She turned and fled, through the dining room and out the backdoor, his heavy footsteps following behind her.
She slowed to a sudden stop in front of the pool, arms flinging around and nearly falling in. Furrowing her brow, she turned on her heel and, spurred on by a spark of courage and indignity, stepped forward to her oncoming boyfriend, who pushed her chest jarringly, causing her to fall painfully onto her ass. He followed her down, eyes wild with furry, and grabbed her throat with both hands.
Her fingers gripped his hands, trying to pry them off her throat. He squeezed her windpipe and forced her flat on the ground. His body pressed against hers, trapping her body against the hard concrete. She clawed at the hands crushing her throat, her body wriggling, feet trying to kick out, which only scraped the back of her heels and her lower back against the concrete.
Her hair was a floating mess around her in the water of the pool. He forced her head down under the water. Bubbles blew everywhere as she screamed, taking in an awful gulp of water.
Suddenly, the sky above them filled with a swirling multitude of blue, gold, red and purple light. From above, gold lightning came down and struck the two.
The cosmic lightning hit Adelaide, forcing itself into her and then out, it crackled through the water of the pool. She could feel her body begin to liquify, her very molecules begin to loosen. It was painless but very strange and scary to feel her molecules collapse in on one another and her body to dissolve into water and into the water of the pool. It was disorienting and strange to almost become one with the water around her yet feel her own distinct water molecules. Her consciousness was having trouble differentiating between what was her and what wasn't her.
Meanwhile, the man was wracked with pain and his chest felt as if it was being stabbed, electricity shooting through his body. His hands closed around wet nothing as her face dissolved into water before his very eyes and he face planted into the electrified pool. His body jerked and thrashed about violently before becoming still. His lifeless body floated on the surface of the pool.
