Narrator & Chapter 3

That reminds me - the Hook. I’m sure you are rightly confused, as a young boy James was born with both hands and indeed lived most of his life that way.

It wasn’t until he was much older that he lost his hand, it is a sad story of heartache, broken brotherhood, and the beginning of James and Peter’s eternal struggle—oh, and Smee was there as well.

  Lost Boy - Curly

Curly knew it was coming. He had seen it in Peter’s oddly focused eyes, he had heard it in Tinkerbell’s mocking laughter and felt it in his fellow Lost Boys’ avoidance.

  He was growing up.

The Lost Boys aren’t allowed to grow up, it’s the first rule you learn when Peter whisks you away to Neverland. Curly knew he hadn’t always been ‘Curly’.

Once he had had a different name but it had been left behind with his mother when he had taken the odd boy’s hand and flown off.

He knew that once he was gone Peter would bring a new boy and give him the name ‘Curly’. The other boys would have to pretend there had never been any other with that name. If they didn’t Peter would get mad, and that was never a good thing.

Curly shivered and curled up in his too-small bear cape, it was cold outside the tree, but Peter was likely still in the middle of his games and to go inside right now would be too risky. He had spent the past week trying to avoid his gaze after all.

The soft sound of a bell nearly sent Curly into a panic. Tinkerbell. The faerie companion of Peter was cruel in her enjoyment, she would often tattle on the Lost Boys and get them into trouble.

Curly pulled his too-long arms and legs closer and thought of small things, he didn’t want to grow up. If Tinkerbell noticed his gangly limbs she would know he had broken the rule, she would delight in telling Peter.

Curly shuddered as Tinkerbell’s laughter got closer.
