Chapter 10: The Pact of the Broken

Chapter 10: The Pact of the Broken

Scene: Suspended Plateau Above Aetherion, A Windless Night

  Kael stands alone.

The broken-circle mark on his palm pulses with faint, rhythmic light.

He followed a whisper, a quiet, insistent call that tugged at him until he climbed here.

The sky is absolute black. No stars. No moon. Only the faint glow of the floating city far below.

A silhouette emerges from the darkness.

  Slow.

  Deliberate.

As though stepping out of a half-remembered dream.

  It’s her, the assassin.

But tonight… she carries no blade.

  Dialogue: The Shadow Speaks

Assassin (voice calm, measured, almost gentle):

  “You saw.

Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author.

  You understood.

But you have not yet chosen.”

  Kael (body tense, eyes narrowed):

  “You tried to kill me.”

Assassin (glancing down at her empty hands):

  “No.

  I tested your will.

  And you survived.

So now… I can offer you the truth.”

  Revelation: The Pact

  She extends a black feather.

This time it does not tremble or threaten.

It lies still in her palm — quiet, almost serene.

  Assassin:

“The Broken One does not seek to dominate.

  He seeks to mend.

He wants the Eye to stop suffering.

And you… you are the key.

But no key can turn alone.”

  She steps closer.

Places the feather gently against the mark on Kael’s palm.

Black and azure light erupt together in a silent flare.

A vision crashes over him like a wave.

  Vision: The Broken One

Kael sees a man kneeling in a vast desert made of shattered crystal shards.

The man’s body is cracked like dry earth, veins of darkness threading through his skin.

His eyes are hollow… yet he sings.

A low, sorrowful, ancient, heartbreaking melody that seems to hold the weight of every forgotten storm.

  > The Broken One (in the vision, voice raw and resonant):

  > “I did not break the Eye.

  > I tried to listen to it.

  > And they silenced me for it.”

  Return :

Kael stumbles back, chest heaving, vision blurring with unshed tears.

  Kael (voice cracking):

  “Why show me this?”

  Assassin (softly, almost kindly):

  “Because you are like him.

  You listen.

  You doubt.

  You refuse blind dogmas.

And that is precisely why… he wants to speak with you.”

  The Offer :

  Assassin:

  “Join us.

  Not to betray your companions.

  But to understand.

To hear what the others refuse to admit.

You do not have to pick a side.

  You can become the bridge.”

She holds out the feather once more.

  Waiting.

  Cliffhanger :

Kael stares at the black feather.

  Then at his marked hand.

Then at the empty, starless sky.

He closes his eyes for a long moment.

Kael (barely audible, to himself as much as to her):

  “I want to hear.

But I don’t want to lose myself.”

  He reaches out…

and his fingers brush the feather.
