Chapter 52 : Ember & Gale in the Dark

Chapter 52 - Ember & Gale in the Dark

(Riveria's Advance Route - Aiz & Alise POV)

  1. Entering the Hidden Passage - The Air Is Wrong

The secret Daedalus door slid shut behind them with a grinding thud.

The light from the Dungeon disappeared instantly.

  Silence swallowed everything.

  Not normal silence.

Weighted silence - like every grain of dust was listening.

Alise's steps echoed once... then warped strangely, as if the corridor changed its shape the moment they crossed the threshold.

Lefiya shivered. "This place... doesn't breathe like the Dungeon."

Riveria didn't turn. "That's because it was carved, not grown. Evilus snapped the Dungeon's skin and stitched this on top of it."

  Aiz's hand brushed the wall.

  It felt like bone.

  Not stone.

She withdrew her fingers quickly. "...It's angry."

Alise exhaled once, her lantern-light flickering. "Good. So am I."

  2. The First Trap - No Warning, No Logic

They barely made it twenty steps before the first attack.

Riveria lifted her staff. "Stop. Something-"

  The floor didn't collapse.

  The ceiling didn't drop.

  Instead-

The hallway tilted thirty degrees without warning.

  Stone shrieked.

Lefiya slid sideways with a scream-Aiz grabbed her by the arm, boots digging into the shifting floor.

Alise slammed a gauntlet against the wall to stop herself from skidding into a spike pit that hadn't been there two seconds ago.

"A structural rotation trap?!" Riveria hissed. "That's- that's impossible. The geometry is-"

  She didn't get to finish.

A warped monster - a Ligerfang whose bones protruded from its spine like iron rods - crawled out of a vent shaft in the wall and lunged at Aiz.

  Alise moved first.

Her blade intercepted the beast mid-air, sparks skidding across its iron-hard ribs. It screamed - a choked, humanlike sound.

Aiz followed the attack instantly, wind swirling around her legs as she lunged.

  Together:

  Clang-SHRRK!

  Two blades.

  One strike.

  Monster dropped.

Lefiya's voice trembled. "Monsters shouldn't be able to exist here. This is man-made space."

Riveria's face hardened. "They're being forced in. Dragged from the Dungeon through illegal gates. Evilus is using them like components."

Alise spat on the ground. "Then we break the machine."

  3. The Second Trap - They Want to Separate Them

Riveria raised a hand. "Wait. Don't cross that-"

  FLASH.

  Too late.

The hallway behind them sealed shut with a slab of cursed steel.

The hallway ahead split into three different forks, each one covered with mirrored plates.

  The reflections were wrong.

Aiz's reflection turned its head when she didn't.

  Alise's reflection smiled too wide.

  Lefiya whimpered.

"Don't look at them," Riveria ordered sharply. "Mirrors in Knossos are-"

The mirror-Aiz slashed its sword at them from behind the glass.

The mirror-Alise ignited like a torch.

  Riveria realized it first.

"-They're copying our actions. Predicting them."

  The mirrors pulsed.

  Three Aiz.

  Three Alise.

  Three Lefiya.

All grinning with wrong angles and wrong shadows.

  Aiz swallowed.

  Alise whispered, "...I hate this."

Riveria pointed her staff toward the left fork. "We break the trap before it manifests. My magic-"

  "No," Alise said quietly.

  Riveria paused.

  Alise stepped forward.

  "Let me burn the lies."

Lantern's Echo pulsed behind her ribs.

  Aiz felt it.

For a heartbeat, the wind around her stirred on its own, responding to the heat.

Riveria's eyes widened-she felt it too.

Alise lifted her sword toward the mirror-Aiz reflection in the fork.

  And then-

  FWOOOOOOOSH-!

  The mirrors didn't shatter.

  They melted.

Her fire was cleaner than usual. Focused. Controlled. The hallway filled with heat that didn't burn the team but annihilated the illusion space.

The three forks collapsed into one.

  Aiz stared.

"...Your fire," she whispered. "It feels... calm."

Alise shrugged, breath shaky. "I'm trying something new."

  4. The Human Ambush - Evilus Show Their Teeth

They crossed into a wider room with pillars carved at strange angles.

Riveria's ward spell lit up violently.

  "Contact!"

  Not monsters.

  Humans.

Black-cloaked, masked, knives glinting with poison runes.

  Evilus.

One raised a spell grenade. "For Enyo!"

  Alise snarled, "Shut up-!"

  The grenade hit the ground.

  Purple smoke exploded.

  Aiz moved like lightning.

  FWSSH-

Wind wrapped the smoke, compressing it into a sphere before it could breathe - and kicked it straight back at the cultists.

  Screams.

  Bodies hit the walls.

Alise pushed through the shrinking haze, slashing down a cultist who lunged at Lefiya.

  She didn't hesitate.

Fire caught the man's cloak, pinning him against a pillar.

  His mask melted.

  He screamed her name.

  "Monster!"

That stopped Alise for half a heartbeat.

  Just half.

Aiz stepped beside her and raised her sword between Alise and the cultist's last flailing swipe.

"...He doesn't decide who you are," Aiz said quietly.

  Alise's breath shuddered.

Then she drove her blade through the cultist's arm and ended it clean.

  Riveria took stock.

  "Everyone intact?"

"Y-Yes," Lefiya said, trembling but holding her staff steady.

Riveria's lips twitched subtly. "Good. Because I sense more ahead."

  5. The Horrific Chamber - Memories Embedded in Stone

The corridor widened into a new chamber.

Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.

  Alise froze.

  Aiz froze.

  Even Riveria went slightly pale.

  On the walls-

  Not curses.

  Not sigils.

  Images.

Burned into the stone like charcoal murals.

  Scenes of Daedalus Street.

Scenes of Astrea Familia's final night.

  Bodies.

  Flames.

  Green wind.

  A crimson ribbon falling.

Lefiya covered her mouth in horror. "This... this is-"

  Alise stepped closer.

Her hand lifted toward a burn-mark illustration of a lantern falling into blood.

  She didn't touch it.

  She couldn't.

  Aiz whispered, "...Alise-san."

  Alise swallowed hard.

"They made this," she said. "To remember. To taunt. To honor what they destroyed."

  She turned her head.

  Her eyes glowed like coals.

  "No more."

  6. The Final Trap - The Corridor of Convergence

  The floor trembled ahead.

Riveria realized it a split second before anyone else.

  "MOVE-!"

The corridor around them folded inward.

  Not collapsing.

  Converging.

The walls began squeezing together like a throat swallowing.

  Aiz grabbed Lefiya.

  Alise grabbed Riveria.

  They sprinted.

But the corridor was alive - twisting, tightening, trying to separate them.

Aiz felt her boots skid on shifting stone.

Alise felt her fire sliding out of control as the air thinned.

Riveria felt curses rising all around them.

  Alise yelled, "Aiz-wind-!"

  Aiz yelled back, "Alise-fire-!"

  Something clicked.

  Something aligned.

  The corridor bent-

  ?

And the two girls exhaled at the same time.

  FWOOM-WHRRRRRRL-!

  ?? Aiz's wind wrapped around Alise's flames

  ??? Alise's fire ignited within Aiz's gale

  The air pressure exploded outward-

A spiraling, roaring fusion of gold and red that slammed through the collapsing corridor like a divine piston.

  Walls shattered.

  Sigils ruptured.

The throat of Knossos detonated open in a shower of broken geometry and dying curses.

Riveria shielded Lefiya from the backlash; her eyes were wide with disbelief.

  "...Aiz. Alise."

  Her voice shook.

  "What did you just do?"

  The wind died.

  The embers faded.

  Aiz lowered her sword slowly.

  Alise lowered hers.

They stared at each other for a long, breathless moment.

  Aiz whispered:

"Your fire... fits inside my wind."

  Alise answered:

"And your wind... gives my fire somewhere to go."

Their lantern and gale flickered together once, as if answering each other.

  Even Riveria felt it-

  Not technique.

  Not magic.

  Compatibility.

  In battle.

  In instinct.

  In spirit.

  Lefiya blinked, cheeks flushing.

  "T-That was... beautiful..."

Riveria nodded, voice low with awe.

  "That was... unprecedented."

Alise smirked slightly, though her heart raced.

"Guess heroes don't mind sharing the stage, huh?"

Aiz felt warmth in her chest.

A quiet, steady warmth she hadn't felt in years.

"...I don't mind," she said softly.

  They stepped forward.

  Knossos trembled.

  And somewhere far below-

  Ryuu faced Jura alone.

Finn reached a dead end that wasn't supposed to exist.

Bell descended into the Dungeon, unaware fire and wind were forging their path.

  (Bell's Party - Floor 13 → Floor 14)

  The descent had been steady.

  Careful.

  Predictable.

Bell almost allowed himself to believe the worst was behind them.

  Until the air changed.

  Not gradually.

  Not naturally.

It hit them like opening a forge door.

A wave of heat - not enough to burn, but enough to warn.

  Bell stopped mid-step.

  "...Did anyone else feel that?"

Aisha lowered her stance immediately. "Yeah. That wasn't the Dungeon breathing. That was something big."

Welf wiped his forehead with the back of his arm.

"There's no way the middle floors should feel like a smithy. Even the volcanic mobs don't hit this kind of heat. Not this suddenly."

Haruhime fanned her face, cheeks pink. "It is very warm, Bell-sama... unnaturally so."

Lili had already pulled out her map, scanning for heat-type monsters.

"There shouldn't be anything like that until the deep floors And even then-NOT like this."

  Cassandra stared wide-eyed, trembling.

"It's a warning," she whispered. "A spark on the wrong page. A flame with too many wings."

Daphne grabbed her shoulders. "Okay, GREAT, but what the HELL does that mean?!"

Cassandra pointed upward - not straight above, but diagonally, as if gesturing toward a point in the walls themselves.

"Fire," she whispered. "Wind. Blinding. Spinning. Someone is burning holes in the wrong history."

  Bell froze.

  Fire... and wind?

He didn't know why his heartbeat suddenly quickened.

He didn't know why his breath escaped him in a shaky exhale.

  But he felt something.

  A presence.

  A pressure.

A familiar reckless heartbeat - not his, but one he'd fought beside.

  Aiz?

  No...

  And yet...

Aisha stepped closer to the wall and pressed her palm against it.

"...It's warm," she said. "Really warm. Like someone fired a giant spell right behind this section of rock."

Welf crouched, examining cracks forming in the stone. "Yeah, something big hit the walls from the Knossos side. This pressure... I've felt it from magic swords exploding."

Lili stiffened. "So you're saying someone on the other side of the Dungeon just triggered something strong enough for us to feel it here?!"

  Bell swallowed.

His fingers brushed against the pocket where he kept the Astraea flower.

  It was warm.

  Warmer than it usually was.

  Aisha noticed his expression.

  "Something up, Rabbit?"

  Bell shook his head quickly.

  "Just... just thinking."

  (But he wasn't.

  He was remembering Alise's fire.

And imagining it mixing with Aiz's wind.

And feeling like something incredible had just happened.)

Mikoto glanced toward the corridor ahead.

  "Should we proceed with caution?"

"We always proceed with caution," Daphne muttered. "But yes. This feels wrong."

  Lili nodded, eyes serious.

"Form tight. No rushing. We don't know what's down there, but the middle floors don't heat up without a reason."

Haruhime stepped closer to Bell, voice soft.

  "Bell-sama... are you afraid?"

  Bell shook his head.

  "No," he said honestly.

  He wasn't afraid.

  He was excited.

Something - someone - familiar had touched the Dungeon's heartbeat.

He didn't know yet that it was two blazing women rewriting physics inside Knossos.

  He only felt-

  hope.

  And an odd, burning pull.

  ????? A Faint Echo (Party-Wide Sensation)

As they resumed marching, a faint breeze - impossibly warm, impossibly gentle - brushed past them.

  Bell paused mid-step.

  Haruhime's tails rose.

  Aisha blinked.

  "That felt like..."

  "A gust," Welf finished.

"In the middle floors?" Lili scoffed. "There is no wind in the Dungeon."

  Bell whispered:

  "...Yes. There is."

He didn't know why he said it.

He didn't know how he knew.

But somewhere deep in his Falna, something answered back:

  a spark dancing on wind.

  A promise.

  A warning.

  A greeting.

? Ending Note for This Scene

Bell's party continues downward with a sense of awe and unease.

They don't realize they are walking in the wake of a technique so powerful it scars the Dungeon.

You and I know the truth:

  ?? Alise

  ??? Aiz

made the Dungeon exhale for the first time in years.

  Bell felt it.

  Even his Falna recognized it.

  ?? **AIZ & LEFIYA'S ILLEGAL JOURNAL ENTRY

(They absolutely should NOT be doing this.)**

  Context:

  Alise is bathing.

Aiz is sitting near the journal.

Lefiya walks in on her staring at it intensely.

Dangerous curiosity + zero social skills = catastrophe.

??? AIZ'S "SECRET" ENTRY - PRETENDING TO BE ALISE

(She thinks she's subtle. She is absolutely not.)

Alise → Bell (not actually Alise):

  Bell,

  This is Alise.

  ...Obviously.

I am writing because Aiz said I should "reflect."

  And because-

  Well-

I don't know how to say this without sounding strange.

  When we fought earlier...

When our wind and fire combined...

  I felt something warm.

  Not burning.

  Not painful.

Just warm in the way you sometimes smile when you forget to be shy.

  It surprised me.

  And-

I think you would have liked seeing it.

(At this point Lefiya is staring at me- I mean, at Alise -and mouthing "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!")

  Anyway.

  Aiz says-

(She pauses. Realizes she wrote her own name. Panics. Scribbles out the entire line violently.)

  I think-

  No.

  I felt proud.

  Of myself.

  Of Aiz.

Of the wind that protected the flame.

Of the flame that trusted the wind.

(...Lefiya is stamping on the ground. She looks like she's going to explode.)

  This is too long.

Alise does not write this much.

  I-

  I mean-

  I, Alise, will stop now.

  Good luck on Floor 14.

  Do not fall.

  -Alis-

  -Aiz-

  -ALISE.

  Definitely Alise.

Lantern note: this is fine everything is fine

?? LEFIYA SEES THIS AND PANICS.

She grabs the journal and scribbles desperately underneath.

  ?? LEFIYA'S EMERGENCY-HOT-FLUSTERED COVER-UP ENTRY

(Trying to save Aiz. Makes everything worse.)

Alise → Bell (definitely not Aiz or Lefiya):

  BELL CRANEL,

  THIS IS ALSO ALISE.

I forgot to say something important:

Aiz absolutely did not write anything in this journal.

  Definitely not.

And if anything looked like Aiz wrote it, she didn't.

  Because she wouldn't.

  Ever.

  Write anything.

Especially not about warm wind or your smile.

  That would be ridiculous.

  Anyway-

  Aiz is not blushing.

  She is very calm.

And she did NOT say "his smile is warm like wind" while pacing earlier.

  Absolutely not.

  I-

  I mean-

  ALISE

  just wanted to tell you-

  You're doing great!

  Okay BYE.

  -Alise

  (totally)

?? AIZ REACTING WHILE LEFIYA TRIES TO COVER HER MOUTH

  Aiz (whispering, mortified):

"Lefiya... you wrote more than I did."

  Lefiya (hyperventilating):

"I PANICKED!! BELLLLL IS GOING TO REAAD THIS-!!!"

  Aiz:

"...I think I ruined the journal."

  Lefiya:

"You ruined ME!! I CAN'T BEAR THIS EMOTION-!!!"

?? NOW-BELL READS IT. AND. OH. MY. GOD.

?? BELL'S REPLY ENTRY - THE BLUSH KING ACTIVATED

(He has NO idea what just happened. Thinks Alise is having emotional growth.)

  Bell → Alise

  Alise-san,

  Thank you for your message...

  messages...?

I'm not sure what happened on your side, but:

I'm really glad you felt proud today.

  And if wind felt warm-

  and fire felt safe-

then that's something I hope keeps happening for you.

(...Did you really say my smile was warm?

  If so-

  that... means a lot.

More than I know how to write right now.)

  I...

I don't really know how to respond properly.

  But-

  I'm cheering for you.

  All of you.

And if your wind and fire combine again...

I'd like to see it someday.

  -Bell

  (P.S. Please tell Aiz-san I said hi.

And tell Lefiya-san thank you too.

  For... whatever she did.)

?? PARTY SPY REACTIONS (THE COMEDY KILLS)

  Welf

"...Kid. You just flirted without realizing it. Aiz is going to DIE."

  Aisha

"THIS IS A LOVE QUADRIANGLE AND I'M HERE FOR IT."

  Haruhime

  "He's so sincere... it hurts...!"

  Cassandra

"I see flames... wind... and an elf collapsing from emotional shock."

  Aiz wrote in the journal.

Lefiya made it ten times worse.

  Bell replied like a sweetheart.

Alise is going to SCREAM when she reads this.**

After the battle in Knossos, the group takes a short rest in a half-collapsed alcove.

Alise retrieves her journal from her pack-

-and instantly senses Something Is Wrong?.

?? 1. Alise opens her journal. The world ends.

She flips through the pages casually...

  ...sees her handwriting...

...then sees HER name written with Aiz's handwriting style.

  Her pupils shrink.

  Her breath stops.

  "...What."

  Aiz stiffens beside her.

  Lefiya makes a squeaking sound.

  Alise flips the page again.

  There it is:

"Your smile is warm when you forget to be shy."

  "Aiz says-" (scribbled out violently)

  Alise freezes.

  Her soul leaves her body.

Her face turns a shade of red brighter than her own fire magic.

  "...Aiz."

Aiz looks at the wall very intensely.

  "...Yes?"

  "Aiz."

  "...Yes."

  "AIZ."

  "...It was a mistake."

  ??? 2. Lefiya BREAKS INSTANTLY

  Lefiya falls to her knees.

"ALISE I TRIED TO STOP HER- I TRIED- SHE- SHE WAS POSSESSED BY EMOTIONS- AND- AND- I'M SORRY-"

Alise just stares at both of them, expression blank with shock.

  Then:

  "...You wrote in my journal."

  Aiz nods, mortified.

  "...Yes."

  "You pretended to be me."

  "...Yes."

  "And you wrote this."

  Aiz whisper-exhales:

  "...Yes."

Alise looks down at the page again.

  Her fingers shake.

  Then she sees Bell's reply.

**"If wind felt warm and fire felt safe...

then I hope that keeps happening for you."**

  Alise blinks.

  Slowly.

  Very slowly.

  "...He... hopes it keeps happening."

Aiz looks like she might disintegrate.

Lefiya looks like she's about to ascend into orbit.

?? 3. Alise's emotions hit all at once

  Alise slams the journal shut.

  Alise:

"I CAN'T DO THIS RIGHT NOW- I'M- I'M FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE AND HE'S- HE'S SAYING THINGS- AND YOU TWO ARE MAKING IT WORSE-"

  Aiz (tiny voice):

"...It was not meant to be read."

  Lefiya:

"Aiz said your smile makes wind warm and then I panicked and wrote EVEN MORE-"

  Alise whirls on Lefiya.

  "LEFIYA. WHY?!"

  Lefiya bursts into tears.

"I WANTED TO PROTECT AIZ'S HONOR BUT EVERYTHING I TOUCH BECOMES EMOTIONAL DISASTER-!!!"

Alise drops her head into her hands.

"...I can't believe this. I was dead. I CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD FOR THIS."

????? 4. Aiz tries to apologize... but makes it WORSE

  Aiz:

"I only wanted to say that the wind was warm during our synergy."

  Alise:

"That wasn't even the worst part!"

  Aiz:

"...Was it the part about Bell's smile?"

  Lefiya SCREAMS.

Alise covers her ears. "STOP. STOP TALKING."

?? 5. Riveria walks in right now. Because of course.

  Riveria:

  "What is this noise-"

  She sees:

  Lefiya sobbing

  Aiz red as a tomato

Alise holding her journal like it's a cursed artifact from the Age of Heroes

  Riveria:

  "...I regret asking."

  Alise:

  "Riveria. Help."

  Riveria:

  "No."

?? 6. Alise reads Bell's reply one more time... and softens

  She opens the journal again.

Her eyes drift back to the line:

  **"I'm cheering for you.

And I'd like to see it someday."**

  Her throat tightens.

  Her fingers brush the page.

"...Bell... you idiot..." she whispers softly.

  Not angry.

  Fond.

Embarrassed in the deepest, sweetest way.

  Aiz hears it.

  So does Lefiya.

But they don't comment this time.

  Because Alise's blush-

is the kind you only get when someone says something

that hits exactly where your armor isn't.

?? 7. Alise finally writes back - and it's PERFECT

  Alise → Bell

  Bell,

  There has apparently been

  -a situation-

  in my journal.

  I will explain NOTHING.

  But since you answered...

  I'll say this:

When the wind held the fire today,

it felt good not to burn alone.

And if you want to see it someday...

  ...

  Fine.

But only if you're close enough to dodge when it explodes.

  -Alise

(very angry, very embarrassed, very warm)

?? BONUS: Aiz's micro-entry after Alise falls asleep

Aiz sneaks the journal for ONE SECOND.

  She writes one tiny line:

  "Your fire is kind."

  Bell ????
