Karnna embraces Lilli “Unlike that big lump of ours I know how to say goodbye and see you soon.”

Lilli, hugging her back, laughs. “Pretty sure he was just worried about a solo dive.”

With a deep sigh, Karnna nods her head. “I know, he is such a wonderful bulwark, but he is not much for solo fights. He is too specialized. We have been looking for build ideas but not much luck so far.”

“And here I thought you two were just making out a lot.”

“That too.” Karnna says, grinning, as she vanishes.

“Another purple aura, I need to send this to the dean. We don’t see much in the way of aura changes, this could be a problem guys.”

Tanner raises his hand, “I’ll go. I have a long wait before it’s my turn. You guys need to assign more people.”

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

“We do, admin is getting a better schedule. I volunteered just for you guys.” Katie gives Claire a bright smile.

“Last test and you’ll be in the deep rangers, you young ones ready?” An old, scared hunch back dwarf asks the assembled teenagers.

Karnna looks around the safe room in shock. ‘What the hells?’

“Once you leave the transport room, you must make your way to the safe zone. The only thing that matters is survival. So get yourselves back.” Karnna hangs back to give herself a few minutes of time.

“Your the last kiddo, you sure you want to do this? They mean to kill you out there. The Anvilhand’s are greedy bastards and out for blood and the Chainbreakers are getting too wealthy. The clan heads are wanting what your papa and mothers have made for themselves.”

“I want to serve the dwarf nation not the Anvilhands. The deep rangers is where I can best serve.”

“Alright girl, not supposed to warn you but while you just face the deep. The rest mean to kill ya.”

  “I figured Sir.”

“Now the dumb ones will ambush you almost as soon as you step out the doorway. The others will bide their time and get you when your guard is down and your back is turned. Now you keep that axe sharp. You are the best of the class, and we need you.”

With a head nod, Karnna limbers up her axe and steps through the doorway. She finds a long, damp tunnel. Only the sound of dripping water disturbs the peaceful darkness. She places her back to the nearest tunnel wall, then gazes both directions. Her dwarf sight giving the dank darkness a slight green tint to her black and white vision. Not seeing anything, she closes her eyes, listening. ‘Like papa taught me, use all your senses girl, just cuz you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.’

Karnna breathes in through her nose, taking time to sniff the air. ‘Garlic. That ass Devin. That means his three ass kissers too. Time to die ass clowns.’ With an evil smile, she skulks back the way she came. Karnna stops before the bend in the tunnel to take stock of what lies before her. She steels her nerve with a silent step around the bend, hugging the far side wall. She turns, crouching low and swinging her axe around at knee height. Her hunters, caught by surprise, barely have time to scream before Crystal Anvilhand is dead. Both knees cut through. The follow up strike to her neck silences her forever. Her brother’s chest is cleaved almost all the way through with her continued spin. Karnna stops her motion, allowing Mythril Anvilhand to slide off of her axe blade. With a straight, sharp thrust of her axe. The toe point gouges Bhamdac Keghammer’s throat. Karnna steps back and to the side as the young man falls choking on his blood, unable to gasp for breath. Devin of the garlic breath has just one chance to scream before his head is chopped from crown to chin. Karnna pauses for a moment to listen while she catches her breath. She wrenches her axe from the wannabe killer's head, loots the bodies, and continues with caution. ‘If they leave me alone, I won’t kill them. Treat it like Tanner says. Sometimes street rules apply. This may not be real but what would you do if it was.’

Karnna stops to listen, ‘Something up ahead.’ As she places her back against the tunnel, she sniffs deep. ‘Blood.’ She waits, then feels the air currents stir. ‘There along the floor that shadow is creeping closer.’ Karnna stands still, waiting for the shadow to close with her. ‘Cave Crawler.’ She jumps toward the insect looking monster using her Cleave Skill she strikes the soft bodied critter, killing it. ‘Ambush predator, these things don’t hunt. Something else is up ahead. Careful girl.’ Karnna sneaks the next few feet to another corner. The air currents bring the smell of deep earth and stone. A soft whisper in a harsh, guttural language. Karnna now knows what awaits her, “Deep Gnomes.” So surprised, she blurts it out loud. The whispers stop as Karnna springs around the corner, hacking and slashing at her racial foes. Karnna bellows, “Deep Gnomes.” while she attacks the small squad. Titan’s Slash, followed by Axe Storm, does for the gnomes.

‘Here’s hoping that call out alerts the others.’ After looting the gnomes and a dead Crawler. She continues with caution. ‘Deep Gnomes should not be this high in the tunnels. Something is very wrong.’ Karnna stalks through the tunnel system, killing deep gnomes and other cave monsters, with the occasional Anvilhand that attacks her. She comes across a large open cavern. Karnna pauses, looking around. Not noticing anything on the walls or floor, she steps, when she hears Tanner's voice. ‘No one ever looks up. That's why they die surprised.’ Karnna puts her foot back where it was and looks up.

‘Webs. Thanks Tanner, you are more than just a pretty face.’ Karnna takes a more detailed look over the floor, now that she knows what she is looking for she notices strands of web in the deeper shadows. With a momentary pause for thought, Karnna grins and pulls several items from her storage bracelet. She holds the items in one hand, using the other to light the torches. Once lit, she tosses the flaming brands up into the webs. She watches with glee as the flammable strands catch and spread faster than she could run through the cavern. Shrikes and wails ring out, echoing through the room. She stands still, watching creatures fall and splatter on the floor. Gnome sized cocoons burst into flame and fall, along with a few cocoons of dwarf size. The fire burned out in her area. She steps forward, chopping anything that even remotely looks like it may move. She follows behind the fire. Karnna stops when she hears anguished screams from a gigantic creature, accompanied by the sounds of bubbles popping. She sees movement in the fire as an enormous something struggles, then falls to the floor hard enough to shake the cavern floor. Karnna, not missing a beat, casts her Axe Storm, then casts it again. Three times she casts until she gains the kill notice. ‘Damn Cavern Crawler Queen, was the last boss.’ After she insures, she has looted everything in the cave. She heads for the shining portal home.
