18 - Traveling - Cali

  Hey Dairy,

Someone figured out plumbing for pocket dimensions! It’s complicated, but Luke says he can have it almost set up before we reach the next city.

Basically, we have to put a platform into the bathroom pocket. Under the platform is a big tank for clean water, and a smaller tank for dirty water. The dirty water tank is sitting on a Cleanse rune, which we’ll have to activate every morning. There’s a tube leading out of it into a second tank, and in the tube are several filters. The second tank is sitting on a Purify rune, which we’ll also have to activate every morning. From there is another filter-filled tube leading to a third tank, which is on a heating rune. Whenever it gets full, we’ll boil the water, and the steam will be collected and transferred back to our clean water tank.

I don’t exactly know what the difference is between Cleanse and Purify. I think Cleanse gets rid of visible dirt, while Purify gets rid of germs and bacteria? Something like that.

Mom always said that boiling water makes it safe. So even though there’s filters and magic involved, I feel ok recycling the water because the last step is boiling. On the one hand, I’d feel slightly silly about feeling this way, but on the other hand, it is the last step. Smart science people also wanted to boil it to make sure it’s safe to use, even after the magic and filters. So it’s not silly.

Maki has volunteered to be the person who activates the runes and replaces the filters when they need replacing. I’m glad, because I absolutely would forget.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

Luke has agreed, since we’re gonna get a bunch of water tanks anyways, to put a little water tank in the wagon so I can have running water when I cook! It’ll fit under one of the benches. I’m happy about that.

Maeve and I are going to spend all the money we get for this cargo transfer job on bathroom decorations. The guys are spending their money on the actual plumbing stuff, so we’re paying for the tile and shower curtain and mirrors. We might need more money, since cargo transfer isn’t exactly lucrative, but we have decided to not feel guilty about buying nice, more expensive stuff.

So yeah! We’ve gone from a borrowed wagon, to a personal wagon, to basically a moving house.

Maeve said she feels like her room is hers, but the wagon itself is mine. I hadn't really thought about it, but yeah, I feel the same. No one else has any interest in driving or sleeping up in the tarp, so it’s all pretty much mine.

Oh, Maki hasn't really personalized his pocket room yet. He’s just got a bed and the ice box and a light adjuster. Maeve found out and spent like three hours yelling at him about that today. She said he at least needs a chest for his clothes, and walls are nice, and a mirror would be good, and all kinds of other things.

I think he doesn't want to decorate anything because he’s waiting for Echo. If he decorates in a way she hates, that would be bad. But if he doesn't decorate at all, Maeve said that’s the sign of a psychopath.

I don't really have things decorated. But I did have input on what colors everything should be, and I have several fluffy blankets with different designs on them for my nice little nest. So I don't feel like my “room” isn't personal.

Maybe I should get a wood carving kit and decorate the driver’s bench. That would be fun. And it would give me something to do on the super long, straight, boring stretches of road.

Yeah, I’ll do that when we reach Riverriverriverriver.

  Signing off,
