Five figures watched in anticipation, through a transparent screen at a young man. He had tanned skin, dark brown hair and hazel colored eyes. He was bundled up in a dark green jacket to shield himself against the cold. His blue and purple sneakers crunched softly on the snow as he headed into a big brick building with the words Evergreen Cove High School in big bold letters above the front entrance. Except that the capital E, the v in Cove and all the letters in school except for the o’s were missing. Someone had also spray painted the word is in black spray paint between Cove and High. So now it read “ vergreen Co e IS High oo .”
The screen the figures were watching through hovered above the ground, about four feet wide and six feet long in height. They had all been watching for a while and every one of them had ended up kneeling on the ground watching the boy walk through the hallway to his locker. The room the five were in was all white. Looking at it, you would not be able to tell what was floor or if it had a ceiling. The only thing confirming that there was a floor to begin with was a long wood polished table. Five grand chairs were placed at the table facing the screen. In the middle was a large wooden chair embedded with rubies and outlined in peeling red paint. The owner of the chair had refused to get it repainted many times. To its left was a metal chair with green cushions. It had a cupholder and a first model game boy lazily thrown onto the seat. Next to the green chair was a black stone chair. It had a small 1914 Mauser pistol laid across the chairs right armrest. To the right of the large red chair was a smaller chair made from tree roots. It had handmade purple chair cushions and a small cubby underneath it for books. The last chair to the right of the purple one, was what looked like a king's chair. It was wood spray painted gold, and had red and gold seat cushions with (fake) diamonds embedded into the wood. The chairs owners were currently watching the boy on the screen curse as the late bell rang for his first class.

“Are you sure about this Pip? I mean he’s kind of young, and doesn’t really seem like the kind of human we’d normally choose.” A figure with gray skin and dark green hair voiced as they watched the boy. “We’ve been watching this kid for a while. There’s like, no guarantee he’s going to even die soon. And he doesn't really seem the kind to be able to do the job.” They looked over to another figure with gray skin, except this one had purple hair, the one he had called Pip.
“I’m positive. There’s something about this one Xveca, I know it.” The purple haired figure never took their eyes off of the boy. A gray skinned figure with red hair from behind them stood up and walked away from the screen and towards a table. Where he sat down in the big wooden chair embedded with red jewels. He narrowed his eyes at Pip and spoke.

“You better be right about this Pipolite. I do not wish to have to replace him. And if I do, it will be your fault that the boy ends up in limbo for all eternity.” A woman crouched next to the green haired figure, suddenly stood up and walked towards another black chair at the table.
“Yeah Pip, and I really don’t feel like doing overtime if we have to replace him. I’ve done my century in this shit. I’m not spending another decade trying to train 15 people until we find someone who can handle the job. Because that kid,” She pointed at the screen, “Is not the next Death. Daker’s right,” She gestured to the red haired figure. “He’s too weak, you can sense it.” She folded her arms and slumped down into her chair. The purple figure stood up and walked over to the two at the table.
“Just give it time Katashka! His death date is in two days time. I swear he’ll be great. I just know it. I don’t get to pick people much, but believe me when I tell you this. This one will be unforgettable.” A man with golden eyes walked up behind the purple haired figure and set and hand on their shoulder.
“Lets jus’ hope yer right Pip. Let’s give the lad a shot huh?” The red haired figure in the chair glared down at the purple haired figure.
“I haven’t let you pick a personification in years. And I was hesitant to let you this time. I hope you prove me wrong with this one.” They all looked back to the screen. Where the boy was being pushed against a locker by one of his much larger classmates. A frequent tormentor.
