Chapter 33

Smoke billowed from shattered storefronts, the acrid smell of burning rubber and charred wood filling the air. Sirens wailed in the distance, their shrill cries drowned out by the roar of collapsing buildings and the panicked screams of civilians. The Reapers moved through the chaos like predators, their powers and weapons cutting through the city with terrifying efficiency.

Michael stood atop a crumbling building, his eyes scanning the destruction below. A faint smirk played on his lips as he watched the chaos unfold. “This is what I call a warm-up,” he said, his voice carrying over the noise.

Below, Rook tore through a police barricade like it was made of paper. His massive frame barreled through the line of armored vehicles, his super strength sending cars flipping into the air. Officers scrambled to retreat, their shouts drowned out by Rook’s booming laughter. “Is that all you’ve got?” he roared, slamming his fist into the ground and sending a shockwave that knocked the remaining officers off their feet.

Dexter perched on a rooftop, his rifle resting on the ledge. He took aim, his finger tightening on the trigger. A police helicopter hovered in the distance, its searchlight scanning the streets. Dexter’s lips curled into a cold smile as he fired. The shot curved unnaturally, guided by his Telekinesis, and struck the helicopter’s rotor. The aircraft spun out of control, crashing into a nearby building in a fiery explosion.

“Bullseye,” Dexter muttered, his voice devoid of emotion.

Sylas Kane stood in the middle of the street, her technopathic powers wreaking havoc on the city’s infrastructure. Traffic lights flickered wildly, their signals erratic as cars collided in the intersections. Nearby, a police drone hovered in the air, its weapons trained on her. Sylas raised a hand, her fingers twitching as she overrode its systems. The drone spun around, firing on the officers who had sent it. “Pathetic,” she said, her voice dripping with disdain.

Mara moved through the chaos like a shadow, her cloaking device rendering her nearly invisible. She slipped past a group of officers, her illusions twisting their perception. One officer froze, his eyes wide as he saw his fellow officers turn into monstrous figures. He fired wildly, his bullets striking his own team. Mara watched from the shadows, a faint smile on her lips. “Humans are so easy to break,” she whispered.

A squad of armed officers rounded the corner, their weapons trained on the Reapers. “This is the Metropolitan Police!” one of them shouted through a megaphone. “Drop your weapons and surrender immediately!”

Michael chuckled, his voice low and menacing. “Cute.” He raised his hand, his cybernetic arm glowing faintly. “Let’s show them how we handle requests.”

The officers opened fire, their bullets ricocheting harmlessly off Rook’s reinforced skin. He grinned, charging forward and slamming into their barricade. The force of the impact sent officers flying, their bodies crumpling against the pavement.

Dexter took aim again, his rifle picking off the remaining officers with chilling precision. One by one, they fell, their attempts to fight back utterly futile.

Sylas stepped forward, her hands glowing faintly as she hacked into the officers’ communication systems. “Attention, all units,” her voice echoed through their radios, cold and mocking. “Your efforts are appreciated, but ultimately pointless. Surrender now, or we’ll keep playing.”

The officers exchanged panicked glances, their resolve crumbling under the Reapers’ overwhelming power. One of them dropped his weapon, his hands raised in surrender. The others followed, their faces pale with fear.

Michael stepped forward, his eyes glowing faintly as he surveyed the scene. “Disappointing,” he said, his voice cold. “I was hoping for more of a challenge.”

Rook cracked his knuckles, his grin widening. “Don’t worry, boss. There’s plenty more city to destroy.”

As the police retreated, the Reapers regrouped, their expressions a mix of satisfaction and amusement. Michael leaned against an overturned car, his cybernetic arm resting on the hood. “This is too easy,” he said, his tone almost bored. “I expected more from Earth’s defenses.”

Dexter smirked, reloading his rifle. “Humans aren’t as dangerous as I thought they would be”

Sylas crossed her arms, her gaze sweeping over the destruction. “They’re not even worth the effort. But at least it’s entertaining.”

Mara materialized beside them, her cloaking device deactivating. “They’re like insects,” she said, her voice soft but chilling. “Crush one, and a dozen scatter.”

Rook laughed, his voice booming through the empty street. “I’m just getting started. Let’s see how much of this city we can level before they send in the big guns.”

Michael’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’ve got a job to do. But…” He glanced at the burning buildings and the fleeing civilians. “Might as well enjoy it while we’re here.”

The Reapers moved deeper, their laughter echoing through the streets as the chaos followed in their wake. As London burned.
