Mr.Oliver:
Little Buddy. Man, I had so many of those; each site I’ve been through has had at least one that I’ve bonded well with. Interpret it however you like, but to me, they made some pretty big differences, and to you, Mr.Oliver, this story is for you.
2021:
I love everything about this
“tysm”
We first met late winter, and I discovered one of his base drawings of a Koopa Troopa. We hit it off great and quickly became friends just like that?? . Not much happened afterwards, just liking a few drawings of ours here and there. (I did say it was simpler times) It was only after he got invited to our gaming group (more on that another story) that he really shone. We recruited him when he asked me to make some Toad spritesheets for the project the group was working on at the time, and he LOVES Toad, the amphibian, and the character from Mario. His profile picture even had a cute little toad to show off his love for them.
“YES THAT IS COOL TO HAVE ALL THE COLORS”
Thanks
“I love it so much”
Aw thanks :)
Looking back, the best description I would give to the dude is that he is a lot like the character Flapjack from that 2008 show, The Marvelous Misadventure of Flapjack, from Cartoon Network. A cheerful, eccentric and naive kid with a passion for anything. One day he be goofy around, the next we be playing 3D world on our Switches, and the other he be showing us his cool drawings. (Just like a little buddy would do roaming around the place to brighten our days)
“did p????1????x??????????i??????4?????r????????t?????? prank you”
What do you mean?
“it said you only have 2 drawings buy p????1????x??????????i??????4?????r????????t?????? pro to have more than it said April fools”
Oooh well no I didn't get pranked by p????1????x??????????i??????4?????r????????t??????
“oh-no this site is going to be blocked”
Wait what oh-no now I'm gonna have to move in to another social media website :/
“APRIL FOOLS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA”
AAAAAAAAHHHHAAAH GOOD ONE BRO HAHAHA
“HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA I did that do a different friend he is mad lol”
HAHAHAHA Man how come I didn't see that coming You are funny lol
“him being mad was a prank LMAOOOO”
LMAO HAHAHAH
“bye”
“gtg online school”
See ya dude
“April fools LMAO”
Oh shoot LMAO
“how do you keep falling for this”
“or is it a prank that you are fake falling for them”
Nah it's real I just woke up from bed so my brain isn't functioning properly
“ok lol”
Yeah he was one of the more younger users on the site (like 2-3 years), but he had the same amount of brain cells as us, so . . . yah, we still loved him and treated him like an equal to the group.
There was even a time when he stole my spotlight for a bit. It was a few weeks later, after we became friends, and I uploaded my first GIF of some Super Mario Bros 2 sprites running. It was choppy, cheap, and dull, but like I said 5 years ago, “This is my first gif so I'm fine that you don't like how the animation is.” Mr.Oliver was one of the first who saw that upload and took a critique of it, because he cared.
“all it needs is a better loop”
Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.
Ok I'll try making a better loop
“I think its the clouds”
Maybe I need more frames
“yeah”
The truth was that I had others drawings planned ahead of my schedule so a remake of it wouldn’t happen until a year later, but lo’ and behold, Mr.Oliver somehow knew and decided to take action into his owns hand and remake the entire GIF himself . . . kinda, it was a WIP (work in progress) as the community said, but it was pretty much what my original GIF was, only different colors, completely different ground titles, animation and no clouds at all, but whatever, he also did it for his friend Flynn so I can’t judge, but what did surprise me is that it took less time for him to surpass likes and views compared to my original work, like wow 0_ 0
And look I’m not trying to act jealous or anything, the dude had followed over 800 users, he knew a lot of people . . . oh wait a minute, I did tell him I was jealous ._. BUT HE WAS REASONABLE ABOUT IT
I'm a little jealous that I made the same animation before you did yet you got all the attention but I digress good job on the animation
“Oh sry I had thos stamps for a long time and I have more followers so thats why”
“sry if it sounds rude”
Its okay
“thos where my first stamps”
How long did you had those ?
“when I started I made them by looking at a sprite sheet”
Cool
“I am making the couds now”
You should also change the grass to make it look more like Mario bros 2 grass
“yeah this is kinda just a wip”
Oh Okay so its not finished yet ?
“yes its not done”
He never made a second WIP, let alone finished the work, but it still left an impact of an interesting story that I still remembered of being outclassed by my friend so soon lol.
And his contributions to our gaming group were minimal, but harmless. He loved my toad sprite sheets so much that he took them to make himself a little concept art of our game, that being a toad town.
Pretty good
“the only thing that I drew was the toad town part”
Still looks nice
“ : ) ”
…3 years later…
I look back at that drawing, and now wonder he could be now.
“*Sigh* ??”
His Nickname:
Now THIS is the part of the story I WANTED to write down so badly. It might not mean much to you, reader, but it means so much to me as it’s one of my most proud works in nicknaming history. Speaking of which, to start this story, I have a major thing with like 98% of my online friends in that I love giving them nicknames. I don’t know when this started, it just comes naturally once I befriend someone, and I go DEEP thinking on how these nicknames should work. They should mean something, have layers of symbolism, and represent who these friends are. We got the geniuses that are Pitaya, Lotus, Ancient, Foxygirl, Lundwig, Marcus, Lexicon, Pseudo, Crypto, etc, all thought of by moi.
So what does Mr.Oliver mean? Well first off, we already established he loves toads and Super Mario toad, hold on to that, but his real life name is also Oliver.
Oooooo oh okay so Mr.Oliver because it’s formal?
No.
We go to Thomas the Tank Engine, why? Because I love that show so much, and so does Oliver. And the craziest part? There’s this Character in the show named Oliver, a (GWR) 14xx Class 0-4-2T steam engine, who BY THE WAY is accompanied by a brakevan named TOAD, OLIVER AND TOAD, OLIVER LIKES TOAD, GENIUS CONNECTION, IN ADDITION THAT TOAD IN THOMAS CALLS OLIVER, MR.OLIVER, SO I WENT WITH THAT AS HIS NICKNAME, simple, but LAYERFUL (most of this excitement is personal, but it still means a lot to how much this nickname went full circle.)
To summarize, his name is Oliver, who likes Toads and Super Mario Toad. I like Super Mario too. There’s a Thomas & Friends duo named Oliver and Toad, two things that connect very well to Oliver, alongside his love for Toads and Super Mario Toad, and the train show he likes as well.
And that’s also pretty much the norm of my thought process behind making my friend’s nicknames, and as to why I try so hard is because 1. Good ass stories, and 2. After the first few, it starts to become a reflection of the shared interests, memories, and meaningful bonds that once made my friendships unique to everyone . . . I would do a lot for them, yeah.
Rusty:
To end off this chapter, I wanna talk about his best friend, Rusty (that this will not be the last time we’ll see of him). Rusty, to put it short, was also a big Toad fan at the time, tho he leaned more towards Toadette, but that didn’t matter, Mr.Oliver and Rusty still hit it off and became really close buds for a pretty long time. They were the Blue Toad and Toadette duo lol. The times when we see Mr.Oliver being at his most active would be when he’s chatting with Rusty, having conversations lasting up to weeks with around 60-100+ comments! Of course, like with BootThunder and Lundwig, I wouldn’t wanna share some of it due to privacy reasons. Those two did talk deep and no wonder Oliver loved hanging out with him; they knew each other well and understood each other greatly outside of the toad fanatic.
Anyways, here’s some out of context moments from them so y’all can get why they adore each other a lot.
“I only commit ear crimes on mc surivial servers”
“or the wet nuggs”
“I hate today, also sorry to ask but can you draw toad”
“I did co-op cuz id rather give the win then losing and looking bad”
“took it sllow and stedy”
Sadly, like all friendships online, they strayed away, with Oliver actually being the one to leave early. We hadn’t seen him in 2022 without any sight, and I always wonder where he would go, all alone. Even his Nintendo Switch account has been inactive for a few years now, not a trace in sight. At least he lived long enough to upload a drawing of his best bud, Rusty with Toadette for him to use as a PFP for his Minecraft account. I always fear what happens to those who leave abruptly. They were once people I knew, now faded away in existence online, with only my memories left to share. He wouldn’t be the only one, though; there are dozens, maybe hundreds of close friends that we met, now gone years later. You meant a lot to me, Mr.Oliver, and I know Rusty must’ve felt the same, too.
We return to our first interaction.
This is where our friendship stated
*started
“ :O “
'sniff' yea :)
“ :D “
Its only been 3 months and yet we share so many great memories
“almost four :OOO”
We’re old
“yes”
