Chapter 4: Okay, honestly the bread was the scariest part.

Meko walked in the forest nervously, or what seemed to be, like a deer. Until he felt something bump his back, and he fell into a puddle of shaking fear. Shivering until he almost fainted.

“I didn’t think you’d completely miss my wings! Or maybe you like the noise? The noise of my wings good?” Su giggled, not really knowing he’d made Meko into a shivering mess.

After a few seconds, Meko had slowly gotten up from his position and realized Su had the axe. “I realized you forgot the Axe! I figured I’d bring it to ya, cause you can’t chop down trees… with your bare hands… Right?”

  “Y-Yeah…”

I can’t believe I didn’t hear his wings, or maybe I did… Did I? I mean, whatever. He brought me an Axe, which is helpful. Not against monsters that much, but against wood… Which is nice, very nice, all good… Good. Not night, just good. It’s. Good.

Meko was staring at the Axe when Su yawned Meko out of his deep thoughts.

“So, you find wood, I follow you, we find wood, and um… You do what, exactly? Do you eat wood? I like wood, it’s cool looking.”

Meko just stared at Su, Su staring back happily. Then Meko sighed and got to chopping.

The sun was half-way gone, the bugs were chirping, and the wings of Su were still flapping with Meko. As the stumbling sounds of wood dropping on the ground every few minutes entered Rosha’s ears.

She sat on a tree branch, her feet were like those of a beast; two long nail like toes in the front, one in the back that perfectly went around the tree, the red of her skin was hidden under the blackish blue hood and robe, her slanted yellow filled eyes with the black middle followed Meko slowly, the reflection seemed cold in a way.

The Predator was watching the Prey.

Why was I picked? I mean, seriously, it’s getting dark, I can’t carry all this wood! And I’m sure Su is just laughing it up, he’s plotting, no, wait. He’s not plotting, he’s just a goof-ball, like Walwo. Or well, somewhat. I mean… Oh, there they are. Not too far now.

“Hey, can you at least take the axe, Su?” Meko’s voice was strained as used all his strength to hold up what little wood he had.

“Axe! Held! NOW!” Su yelled at Meko with the passion of a kid finding whole chocolate candy for free. Meko had fallen forward and dropped all the stuff, including himself, onto the ground.

The sun shot its final rays of light, until the blue night sky had taken place, then the darkness of the night came soon after Meko had woken back up, seeing Su sleeping beside him. The forest was yet again night, but this time. It was silent, and dark. Meko couldn’t see in the dark, and Su couldn’t see straight, as they bumped into each other.

The light footsteps just in front of them made Meko wonder where Su had gone, as the flapping had stopped. Then, there was silence yet again, besides the light breathing of the person in front of the fallen Meko.

Then the darkness was broken as Bebe rubbed his torch back to life. “Get up, come on, we had to find fire wood ourselves.” Bebe turned, he was obviously aggravated, but Meko was sure Su was right there.

As they traveled back to the camp, Su was sleeping beside Walwo at the fire. So that left Meko with one question: who was with him when he got up? He was sure it was Su.

As Meko curls up beside Bebe, he looks at the forest. He doesn’t stop actually, even as Bebe falls asleep. Meko still stares at the forest, and stares and stares.

Then he’s shaken awake, “Hey, dude, I know you’re probably really exhausted, but Bebe is already over there on the top of the hill.” Meko’s black eyebags made him look very burnt out.

“When… When did I fall asleep?”

  Walwo just shrugged cheerfully.

As Su and Walwo walked away and went onto the fields to the hill, Meko looked up, the sky was blue, sky blue, and to him, even if the sun was already half way in the middle of it. It was better than the dark.

“What is you thinking of?” Su flew beside Meko, only for Meko to jerk away, his pupils becoming small.

“N-nothing… Just.” Meko stepped back just a few steps, he twitched very subtly as they walked along the day of the fields. Walwo was just a few feet ahead, but he was already humming a tune and smiling at the bees that passed and the birds that sang.

After a long moment of this. Su just stared, and Meko, still keeping distance, asked quietly. “Where were you, when I fell?”

“Fell? Fell…. OH! When you fall on wood because you falled? Yes, I flew away to tell Walwo! Um. But I got tired and just went to sleep.”

“So…. Did you… ever come back?”

“Nope! I woke up just when the sun was peeking from the east.”

Meko then slowly moved to a more natural way of walking, not too close to Su, but not purposely avoiding him, but every few minutes, his eyes would turn to the left, and to the right.

The soft winds pushing the grass and the sound of the hum was interrupted as they all were on the hill, Bebe holding Meko’s shoulder, “Hey, look. It’s a town. Small, but you get to sleep in an Inn, I’ll let you rest in my room. Just stop shivering so much.” Bebe was pointing at the town down just half an hour away.

Meko smiled slightly, it wasn’t like the natural curve of Bebe’s half-smile, it was a shaky smile.

When they stopped for lunch, Bebe handed Walwo and Meko a bag of wrapped bread. “It’s better than nothing, we’ll stack up at the town, for now, enjoy your stale bread.” Bebe took half and threw the other half on the ground for Su. “Eat it.”

Su gazed at the bread for a long moment, or as well as his eyes could, and suddenly, he ate it whole.

Meko ate his food quietly but quickly, still looking at the forest edges of the fields every now and then. Walwo has taken a big bite of his, before getting to see a particularly big bee set the rest of the bread down to go look at it.

“It tasted like banana! I had a banana one time! I tasted it’s flavors were good!” Su bumped into Bebe for more, causing Bebe to move against Su.

  “Knock it off, bat-brains.”

“BRREAAAD! I NNNNEEEEEEDDD MORE BREAD!” Su continued trying to push Bebe, even while Bebe was sitting down on the ground.

Meko looked at the forest for one last long second, then he sat more naturally. For a moment Meko just tasted the bread.

“This… This stuff is terrible.” Meko’s eyes watered.

“Oh come on, you’ve only eaten Golden Bie Bread, right?” Bebe rolled his eyes and snatched the bread from Meko. “I mean, if you're gonna complain like that, you can just wait till we get there.”

I almost forgot he COULDN’T eat anything but the highest quality of bread. Brat.

“I erm…” Meko sat on the ground until Walwo had come back not too long after the whole incident with stale bread.

“We should go, I’d rather get there earlier than later. It’s already I.” Walwo nodded, walking beside Meko as he watched Su fly around the fields not too far off.

Bebe still in front, Meko checked his area again, left, right, right, left. “Um, hey Walwo?”

Walwo didn’t really stop walking, but he looked at Meko as he tried to walk as slow as him. “Yah?” Walwo flashed Meko a quick full smile and a tilt of his head.

“How come I’ve only been up for about 2 hours? It’s already I…”

Walwo smiled again, he was looking forward now. “Oh, well, Bebe said you should sleep in, so yeah. It’s cause you haven’t really been up that long anyway.”

Walwo failed to notice Meko’s wide eyes and flustered expression, it’s as if he’d learned he had a brother, and an older one at that. It seemed to die as they walked, the walk felt nice, natural, needed. Meko breathed in the fresh air of the fields, even if afterwards he looked around.

  ---

The town wasn’t large, you could walk through it in about thirty minutes. The ground here was less grass and just soil.

“Here, we can go get a room in here.” Bebe pointed, he was still looking out past the town, trying to see the destination, or at least the half mark. Su was playing dead in Walwo’s arms.

“Hey, Bebe. I need a backpack… One to fit Su in.” Walwo stood besides Bebe, Bebe turned his head slowly, gently, he grabbed out his hidden pouch and handed Walwo 10 monster crystals, and 5 gold coins.

  “You know the deal.”

Walwo shook his head and walked off, Meko stood besides Bebe as they walked into the inn, the sun was on the other side of the sky, still much brighter than last night, Meko felt.

As they walked in, there wasn’t a whole lot of action, the card games and whisky were a much more relaxed detail than Meko had heard of in books. Bebe looked around, as everyone looked back at him. It made Meko nervous.

“Hello.” Bebe said, it was covered in a non-genuine friendliness.

The people waved and whispered their greats back, returning to their card games as the bartender waved them in. As they walked to the bar, the bartender had a suit on, it was much ahead of it’s time, Meko recognized it like a shooting star through a blank night sky.

“Is that… the… the…” He flustered, he didn’t notice the bartender’s long hair, nor gentle eyes, just the clothing.

“Well, ain’t you a coin holder, this here is most definitely the Soaper D original. It’s a collectible, my granny-ma gave it to me. So, I’m figuring ya folks ain’t from around here.” Her accent wasn’t one that a rich person had, it was more to the west. Where the lands were barren and drier.

Before Meko could even open his mouth, Bebe cut through. “We just want a room. Make it…” Bebe looked at Meko for what felt like minutes, but broke instantly. “For me and my cousin here.”

No wrong ideas, lady. I don’t plan on letting you assume something.

He gave her 7 golden coins, and walked up the stairs as the maid directed him, to Bebe, she looked closely related to the bartender, the natural light purple hair, the half pointy ears.

Walwo jumped through the air, then landed in a muddle puddle. “Welp, I better be getting back to… Which inn was it.”

He looked around, he may not have remembered the Inn, but he remembered the way everything looked, Su already lightly snoring in the backpack that was snug for him. Going on back to the beginning of the FIELDS!~

Walwo bumped into an old lady on his way to the main path. He was taller than her, like usual. “Sorry, Ms. I didn’t see ya!” He helped her up, and gave her a silver coin. She smiled, it wasn’t much, but it was kind.

Before the sun had yawned out in the west, Walwo got back to the main street of soil. Everyone that would have been out in the Kingdom, just wasn’t. No one came out, the houses weren’t really tall. Even the shops weren’t pushing to sell, they were just there.

Walwo didn’t care though, as he walked into the Inn. Upon arriving, everyone looked up again, Walwo looked back and waved at them, they all gently smiled back and waved back, going back to their business.

“Come on, come on, you must be Walwo, right? I know someone who looks new when I see ‘em. Your buddies got you a room for yourself.” The bartender said calmly, not loud nor trying to be.

Walwo looked at her, he was clearly meeting someone new. The suit was cool, but most half-elves never wore such, not with an accent like that. It made her cool.

As Walwo walked up the stairs to his room, behind the maid. He entered a nice small simple room, not much to do, a bathroom, two small beds, a small window, a table, and a few other necessary things.

As the maid closed the door, Walwo put his backpack down and opened it. Patting Su’s head as he laid on his bed. When Walwo opened his eyes, he hadn’t gotten any sleep, but he did notice the moon, it was now shining down through the window.

A slight creak, nothing alarming, was heard from Walwo’s door. He didn’t move, not even his eyes.

  “You mind?” he whispered.

Su was still asleep, Walwo didn’t say anything.

“I just wanted to come and check up on you. I know I’ve been…” The person sighed, it was dark in the room, making the person’s outline really the only thing visible. “I love you. Ya know. Like a brother.”

The person chuckled quietly, before rubbing his own arm and shuffling back out.

“I love you too, man.” Walwo whispered, it wasn’t needed to be heard, it was already implied.
