Chapter One

  Step.Step.Step.

Ana looked around the sparse room she found herself in and dropped the duffel bag she had slung over her shoulder.

So this is it, huh? The Silver Exorcist Corps. The room is a little bare, but it’s no different than the shoebox I had at home.

The door creaked open behind her, and she looked over her shoulder with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh, you're one of the building’s Angels,” Ana smirked.

The Angel flinched at her smirk. Her teeth were sharp at the edges, not entirely human. His hands trembled as he held Ana’s uniform.

“Tsk,” Ana scoffed. Her thin tail fired from behind her and snatched the clothing.

The boy quickly hurried from her room and didn’t look back. She just rolled her eyes before turning her attention to the uniform she was provided. The button-up jacket was black with the Exorcist Core insignia stamped onto the left shoulder, while the pants were streamlined and a darker black. She pulled on the uniform and then looked down.

Yeah, I am not wearing those slippers… I’ll just stick to my boots.

She bent down and swiftly tied up the red laces. Ana stood up and stared at herself in the mirror. Her manic and spiked red hair refused to stay tamed, and her eyes were a pair of golden coins. And just to add a little personality, she unbuttoned the top button, letting her collar free.

A bell rang as she finished up, leading her to exit her room, still unpacked. She found herself mobbed into a sea of other recruits like her, all heading to the validation room. Ana was squished shoulder to shoulder on both sides towards the back.

Hell NO! If I stay back here, I won’t get verified until midnight!

A spark of fire hissed from between Ana’s teeth, but before doing something reckless, a big hand clamped around her shoulder. She looked back and stared into the face of the grizzled Captain Kazuro Idate. His black, wavy hair framed his face like curtains, unkempt and uncaring.

“Ms. Shirogane, I’m going to need you to come with me,” Kazuro said, but sounded more like a demand.

“I’m not going anywhere with you, Gramps.” Ana snarled.

The captain’s eyes widened before narrowing again. “You brat! I’m your Captain. I wasn’t asking you. I am giving an order.”

Captain?...oh crap! He’s Kazuro Idate! Way to make a first impression, Ana

She lowered her head and bowed. “Please accept my sincerest apologies, sir!”

  “Forget it and follow me.”

The sea of recruits split, opening up to allow the pair to pass easily. Ana followed the towering man through a big door, which led to an honestly cozy office.

“Sit,” Kazuro ordered, pulling out a seat for her.

Ana sat down across from him at the desk. He opened up his desk drawer and pulled out a file with her name on it, along with a flask.

“Anarchy Shirogane,” Kazuro said her name almost with a sigh, before unscrewing his flask and taking a swig from it. “You know I’m sticking out my neck for you to be here right now, right?”

“I go by Ana…I hate the name my mother gave me.” She corrected. “But yes, I know how much you're sacrificing for me to be here.”

“Yeah, damn near impossible to get out a letter of recommendation for the Demon King’s half brat,” Kazuro said, wiping the booze from his lips before closing the flask. “Just don’t fuck up because if you fuck up its not just your job on the line its mine too.”

A subtle black spark of electricity zapped between Anarchy’s fingers at the mention of her father. “Don’t worry, you're not gonna have any problems from me.”

“Good, now with that out of the way, I’m assigning you to Unit 7 in the Silver Corps. Your registration number is 02.” Kazuro said, sliding over a license with Anarchy’s name, photo, registration number, and rank. “You’ll be verified later tonight when the other recruits have returned to their rooms.”

Ana picked up the badge and clipped it to her hip before standing up. “Thank you, sir.”

She exited the room and headed back to her room, her eyes glued to the license now in her hand.

One step closer to proving you wrong.
