Chapter 24

The rescue team arrives back at Lucius Island. On the way the wounds that didn't heal on their own were treated. Kai jumps out of the helicopter and stomps over the beach into the estate's living room. His friends and Lucius close behind. The ones who remained on the island are just coming up from the basement; see Kai and follow him.

"Explain how many monstrously strong people you guys know are left out there you didn't tell us about?!"

He yells at Lucius. Lucius assures there are no more before he begins to explain who Cain is. As it turns out, everything Cain said was true. Percy is stunned, his atheistic worldviews challenged.

"That's impossible. The Bible's stories are mostly false."

"That may be, but in a world like this, is it so absurd that a God exists?"

"Yes, if something like this exists, why do nightmares exist? Why doesn't he erase them to save his oh-so-loved creation?"

Lucius sighs, answering that he doesn't know. Rumi clears her throat, and Lucius looks at her for a moment.

"Ah yes, Cain also has the rank of Hyper-Lethal number 3. So you're more than lucky that he was just playing around and left."

Kai is even more furious now.

"Playing around?! He nearly killed all of us."

"The fact that you managed to fight for 30 seconds with him is a sign that he was just playing. Even I couldn't keep up with him if he goes all out."

Rumi interrupts. Kai falls silent and looks down.

  "I feel flattered."

As the words travel through the room, everyone turns towards their source. The four that fought earlier freeze, terrified. Rumi and Nova are just the same.

"Sorry, I forgot. Knock knock. The door was open, so I just came in."

In the doorway of the living room stands Cain. Dressed in fresh clothes and made hair. On his belt hangs the weird blade he took from Percy. Shocked, Lucius stammers, asking him how he knows where his island is located. Cain smirks.

"Old friend. I know every place on earth, even those science has yet to discover. Remember, I'm very old. I had time to travel."

He musters those present and laughs. Telling them to relax and that he's just here to thank Percy for bringing him his beloved blade back. Then suddenly. His head explodes, and blood is splattered all over the furniture. The headless body remains standing, and behind him, Ragnar enters the room.

  "I can't stand this guy's voice!"

"Oh, the perfect being is also here. And I even had the honor of being injured by him."

Cain mocks after his head regenerates flawlessly. Ragnar tenses up as he gets called by that nickname. Saying that Cain should not call him this way.

"Did I strike a nerve? But that's what you are, or not? Should I rather call you the ultimate lifeform? Or..."

His head explodes again before he can finish his sentence. It regenerates just as quickly. The others wince as more blood splatters around.

"I said stop. I'm human just like the rest of you!"

Rumi turns her head away from her husband, thinking to herself.

"Not really, but I shouldn't say that out loud."

  "Calm down, man."

Cain murmurs, almost sulky. Lucius sighs once more and asks him if that would be all. Cain shakes his head, stating that he wanted one more thing, but that he has forgotten it, given that his head exploded. Twice. And that he'll need a minute to remember.

In an exaggerated manner, he strikes thinking poses.

Rumi leans towards Lucius and asks him if it is a good idea to hear his request. Lucius just shrugs his shoulder.

In the silence of the room, Teon notices how much more relaxed everyone seems since Ragnar entered. Then Cain speaks up again.

"Ah yes, I remember. After 'testing' your students, I've come to the conclusion they're too weak. So I'm here to suggest myself as a sparring partner."

After he stops speaking, a bright grin forms on his face. Rumi panics, saying that it's a horrible idea, that he has no feeling for how to hold back and gets lost too quickly in a fight and never knows when to stop. Cain pouts, stating that he can hear her. Teon has to hold back a smirk, as to him, right now, Cain looks more like an insulted child than an eons-old being.

"Rumi is right, but maybe... under supervision, he could be the perfect sparring partner for Teon and Kaia."

  "Alright."

"Cain's face lights up again as Lucius agrees.

"But with one condition: you'll only spar with these two."

He points at Teon and Kaia.

"And only under supervision of me or Ragnar."

The shine on Cain's face fades for a moment, but he agrees with a grin. He turns around to leave but stops in the threshold and turns around again.

  "One last question."

  "Yeah?"

"Do I get my own room?"

Lucius sighs annoyed and nods while also waving dismissively with his hand.

"Yeah, yeah. You'll get your own room."

  "You're the best, old friend."

And with this Cain leaves the room, just as silent as he entered. Teon looks at Lucius.

  "Why did you say yes?"

"Because he is someone you can truly go all out against, with the intent to kill."

He turns to Ragnar, who is angrily staring at the ground.

"I hope I can count on you."

Ragnar's eyes shot up at Lucius, with a glare so intense that it let the blood in his veins freeze.

"You know my history with him. I despise him more than anything."

"Yes. But you and I are the only ones who can do it."

Ragnar sighs, and his gaze relaxes.

"I'll watch them. I have nothing better to do anyways."

Lucius thanks him and bows down slightly. Right after, Rumi grabs Ragnar's hand and pulls him along with her.

"Let's go for a walk, my love."

The room is silent until the front door clicks shut.

"Sometimes I could get jealous at what they have."

Max speaks up, just to earn surprised looks from her friends, especially Lloyd Percy and Kai. She blushes slightly.

"Why are you looking at me like this? Just because I'm rude doesn't mean I don't want something like this in my life!"

Slowly everone starts to leave the room, but Teon and Kaia are stopped, by Lucius, with a hand placed on their shoulders.

"Are you two back in shape to train?"

Kaia nods wordlessly; he smiles at her and lets go of her shoulder. After she left, Lucius turned Teon around and asked to see his wound. Teon pulls his shirt up, revealing a small pale scar on the left side of his torso.

"Despite your regeneration, it left a scar."

"Yes, but it's fading quickly. It should be gone in a few hours, maybe a day."

Lucius nods and pats Teon on the shoulder.

  "You can go."

The moment he is finally alone, Lucius runs both hands over his face, sighs, and lets himself fall onto the couch.

"God, what is happening in this world?"
