Chapter 39. The Woman He Loved

Two days passed like this, and every evening he encountered gatherings of spirits.

Though Subedei endured fighting the Whispering Spirits until morning, no notification ever came saying he had cleared the floor.

He found it strange, but he didn’t care. Killing these countless Whispering Spirits pleased him.

Since arriving on this floor, his muscles ached every single day.

Not once had he known an easy, painless day.

He endured it all with clenched teeth and fought every night.

Now, even moving his body to fight had become much easier for him.

It was as if his body was gradually adapting to these endless battles.

Subedei looked down at himself and murmured softly,

“When I get out of here, I’ll rest for at least a few days. I’ve been advancing floors fast enough.”

After saying that, he lay down on the ground with a faint smile.

His eyes were tired from battle, dark circles forming beneath them.

Soon evening came again, and Subedei gripped his spear tightly, waiting for the Whispering Spirits to appear.

The fog gathered once more, slowly thickening, and the devilish whispers followed it from nowhere.

Within the dense mist, several dark shadows flew toward him, but he did not charge.

Instead, he let them pass quietly by his side, as if waiting for something.

Suddenly, more dark shapes began emerging from the thick fog, heading toward him.

Subedei watched without much concern, but the number of visible shadows kept increasing.

Seeing this, his eyes gleamed, and with a smile he stood waiting for the massive swarm flying toward him.

The Whispering Spirits approached and surrounded him, hundreds of them circling in the air.

Subedei raised his spear and immediately activated his skill.

[Your body and weapon are covered in mana. Strength increased by 20%]

His spear, cloaked in blue mana, moved toward the Whispering Spirits and easily split several of them in half.

  [You have killed “Whispering Spirit”]

He ignored the familiar sound and continued swinging.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Each of his attacks was powerful and swift—attacks meant only to kill.

Every swing of his spear slew three or four Whispering Spirits.

But this time, something about the countless spirits felt strange.

As if afraid of something, they suddenly began trembling.

Their devilish shrieks quieted, as though they were fearfully awaiting someone.

Suddenly, the Whispering Spirits flying around Subedei parted in the middle, forming a circular opening like a hollow moon.

They trembled as they slowly flew around the edge of that opening.

Before long, from the center of the circle, a spirit emerged from nowhere and hovered in the air.

Its body was snow-white, making it look completely different from the others.

Much larger than the Whispering Spirits, it had arms and legs—appearing almost human.

The other spirits trembled and circled around it.

Subedei stared at the human-like spirit that had appeared before him, standing there in surprise.

Seeing that all the others feared this seemingly ordinary spirit, he tightened his grip on his spear.

He watched the large spirit cautiously.

The human-like spirit looked at Subedei with an emotionless face, a faint smile forming on its lips.

It gently raised its hand and slowly waved toward Subedei, speaking a single word in an unknown language.

  “Sleep…”

Hearing the unfamiliar word, Subedei was startled and confused.

A powerful wind blew toward him from the spirit’s gesture. He raised both arms to resist it and closed his eyes for a moment.

His clothes fluttered violently in the wind.

When he opened his eyes again, everything before him had changed.

The land once surrounded by countless Whispering Spirits had transformed into an ordinary world.

Subedei didn’t understand what was happening. He simply walked forward.

He was much younger now, walking beside the place where he had first lived.

Though it had been dark outside, dawn seemed to be breaking, the sun slowly rising.

Subedei continued walking until he stopped in front of a building.

It seemed as though he was waiting for someone.

He slowly walked over and sat on a bench beside the building.

Soon, the sound of a door opening was heard.

He stood and turned around—and a woman stepped out.

It was the very same woman Subedei had once seen and stood silently watching.

She looked slightly younger than before—cute and gentle.

Subedei slowly walked up beside her.

  “Shall we go?” he asked.

The cute woman nodded in agreement, and they began walking together.

After they had walked for a short while, Subedei gathered his courage and took her hand.

She said nothing. Instead, she tightened her grip around his hand.

A smile spread across Subedei’s face, and the two of them walked slowly, hand in hand.

As they talked, before they knew it, they arrived at their destination.

At that moment, Subedei reached into his shirt pocket and took something out.

It was just a bottle of milk.

With a nervous expression, he handed it to the cute woman.

  “This…”

“Drink milk in the morning. It’s good for your health.”

Hearing this, the woman smiled and took the milk from his hand.

  She began to walk away.

But suddenly, she turned back and walked toward Subedei.

As he looked at her in surprise, she stepped close and kissed him on the cheek.

Before he could process what had happened, she ran off quickly and disappeared from sight.

Subedei slowly turned and began walking home.

As he walked, he touched the place where she had kissed him, an involuntary gentle smile forming on his face.

  Then the scene changed again.

It was as if all the happy moments he had shared with her were playing before his eyes.

The first time he met her.

The first time he held her.

The first time he kissed her.

Meanwhile, in the tower, Subedei’s real body remained standing without collapsing.

His face showed no emotion, yet a soft smile appeared.

It had become a habit—he always smiled whenever he thought of her.

The Whispering Spirits circled around him, while the enormous spirit stared at him.

Suddenly, Subedei’s eyes opened, glowing with a golden light. The blue mana covering his body and weapon grew brighter.

Like a beast that had spotted its prey, he immediately charged toward the Whispering Spirit.
