Dawn broke over Eldervale, casting golden rays across the town walls as eleven hunters gathered at the eastern gate.
The mission ahead was unlike any they had faced before, a journey into Black Wood Forest, a place where even seasoned hunters feared to go.
Three rank S hunters and eight rank A hunters stood ready, their faces serious with determination.
Ethan arrived last, his seven knives securely strapped to his belt. His eyes immediately searched for Emberlyn, her crimson hair catching the morning light like a living flame.
"Morning, Emberlyn!" he called out warmly, with a slight smile on his face.
Emberlyn's eyes met him for only a moment before she turned away, her expression unchanged.
"Now that everyone's here, let's start the briefing," she announced, her voice crisp and commanding, completely ignoring Ethan's greeting.
Ethan felt a familiar ache in his chest, the pain of not being acknowledged that he had learned to live with these past two years. This was Emberlyn in her professional mode, the legendary Blazing Valkyrie, commanding and distant.
So different from the woman who once whispered my name in the quiet mornings, he thought, his smile never fading despite the pain.
The gathered hunters turned to look at Ethan, many eyes studying him with open curiosity. Most had never seen him before.
As a solo hunter who rarely spent time with others, Ethan was unusual in their close community.
Lucas's teammates exchanged glances, their expressions showing recognition mixed with disbelief.
Vance, the tactical shield specialist, shook his head. "No way. That can't be the same guy."
Darek, the illusion mage, studied Ethan with professional interest. "You know what they say, looks can fool you. And trust me, I should know," he said with a smirk.
Emberlyn cleared her throat, silencing the whispers. "This is our new S-rank hunter," she said, her tone formal, as if introducing a stranger.
Ethan stepped forward, his posture relaxed yet commanding. "Hey everyone, I'm Ethan Culver. Nice to meet you all!" His smile was genuine, eyes crinkling at the corners.
A wave of shocked murmurs rippled through the group. A new rank S hunter? In all of Eldervale's history, only two hunters had ever achieved such status: Emberlyn Scarlet and Lucas Mitchell.
Vance leaned closer to Darek, whispering, "That's impossible. What the hell happened to him?"
Darek shook his head slowly, eyes never leaving Ethan. "I don't know, man. But that... that's not the same pathetic guy we knew two years ago. Something definitely changed."
Before the murmurs could grow louder, Grandmaster Alaric arrived, his large frame and booming voice commanding immediate respect. "Good morning, everyone!"
"Good morning, Grandmaster Alaric!" the rank A hunters chorused respectfully. Ethan, Emberlyn, and Lucas merely nodded in acknowledgment, a privilege given to rank S hunters.
"Looks like you're all ready!" Grandmaster Alaric's eyes twinkled with mischief, though there was real concern beneath his jolly exterior.
"This is the toughest mission I've ever given. So I hope you all go in one piece and come back in one piece." He paused, then grinned broadly. "And if you don't come back in one piece, at least make sure it's a good-looking piece!"
His tasteless joke was met with awkward silence. Emberlyn sighed, clearly used to the Guild Master's strange sense of humor.
"We won't let you down, Grandmaster," Emberlyn said firmly. "We'll find the Crystal of Elaria and secure it before Malakar can get his hands on it."
With that, the team boarded the waiting horse carriages, beginning their three-day journey to Black Wood Forest. The three carriages were arranged by party: Lucas rode in the first with Vance and Darek, his trusted companions.
Ethan found himself in the second alongside Lucy, Jane, and Kira, new members except for him. Emberlyn shared the third with Elise, Marcus, and Dren, her core team.
As the wheels began to turn, Ethan gazed out the window, mentally preparing for what lay ahead.
This mission wasn't just about proving himself, it was about protecting Eldervale, including the orphans at Rivermoor who were counting on him, even if they didn't understand the danger.
The journey stretched across three days of rolling countryside, with the landscape gradually changing from the lush farmlands surrounding Eldervale to sparser vegetation and finally to the ominous edge of Black Wood Forest.
Throughout the journey, whispers and speculations about Ethan continued.

"You think he's actually strong, or did he somehow cheat his way to rank S?" Vance speculated during their midday rest on the second day.
"Maybe he's just good at hiding his real strength," Darek mused, polishing her blade.
In the second carriage, Lucy made no attempt to hide her interest in Ethan.
"So, Ethan," she said, sitting directly across from him, "everyone's dying to know, how did you become rank S so fast? Come on, spill the secret."
Ethan smiled, his eyes revealing nothing. "No secret, really. Just hard work and finding the right path."
"Must've been quite the path," Jane remarked skeptically.
Kira leaned forward, his eyes searching Ethan's face. "I've heard some wild rumors about you, but I still can't figure out what your abilities are. Care to give us a hint?"
Ethan simply nodded, his hands resting comfortably on his knees. "I guess you'll find out when the time comes."
Lucy's eyes lit up with genuine interest. "Oh, come on! That's so mysterious! I can't wait to see what makes you S-rank material!"
From her seat in the third carriage, Emberlyn could see through the window how Lucy leaned closer to Ethan with each question. Something uncomfortable stirred in her chest, an emotion she couldn't quite name but felt like a smoldering ember.
She turned away, focusing instead on the mission briefing papers in her hands, but found her eyes drifting back to the second carriage more often than she cared to admit.
By late afternoon of the second day, they finally arrived at the edge of Black Wood Forest. The forest loomed before them like a wall of ancient trees with bark so dark it seemed to swallow light.
The canopy above was thick, allowing only tiny bits of sunlight to penetrate, creating an eerie, permanent twilight beneath.
As the hunters stepped out of their carriages, a heavy silence fell over the group. The forest seemed to breathe, a subtle rising and falling that put everyone on edge.
"This place gives me the creeps," Elise whispered, her sharp archer senses on high alert.
Emberlyn stood at the forest's edge, her crimson hair bright against the gloom. "This is it. Everyone stays alert and sticks together. We move as one unit." Her voice carried naturally, commanding without being harsh.
"Remember, our goal is to find the Crystal of Elaria before Malakar does. Let's get this done and make it back home safely."
The hunters checked their equipment and weapons one last time, then formed up in their assigned positions. Lucas took the lead, his ornate sword gleaming despite the dim light.
Marcus, the burly axe-wielder from Emberlyn's team, stood confidently beside him. Emberlyn would guard the rear with Dren, her clever tactician, ensuring no one lagged behind or got separated.
Ethan was positioned in the middle of the formation, alongside Lucy, Jane, and Kira.
Lucy moved closer to Ethan as they prepared to enter, her eyes occasionally glancing his way.
"Stick close to me, okay?" she suggested, her tone professional but with an unmistakable hint of interest.
From her position at the back, Emberlyn noticed the interaction. She frowned slightly, then immediately pushed the feeling away as unimportant to the mission.
Dren noticed her reaction and raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
"Light up those torches," Lucas commanded, and soon the area was illuminated by the warm glow of fire. "Let's move out."
With that, the eleven hunters stepped into the oppressive embrace of Black Wood Forest, leaving the safety of the outside world behind.
The forest swallowed them like a living entity, the thick canopy overhead blocking out the sky completely. The air was thick with moisture and the smell of rotting vegetation.
Their torches created small pools of light, but beyond that, the darkness seemed endless.
As they went deeper, a strange fog began to rise from the forest floor, making it even harder to see. The trees loomed like silent watchers, their twisted trunks and branches creating menacing shapes in the torchlight.
"This fog doesn't feel natural," Lucas commented, his voice low as he led the group forward. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword, ready to draw at any moment.
Emberlyn nodded from her position in the rear.
"Stay sharp, everyone. This place is full of surprises." Her eyes constantly scanned their surroundings, her Smolder Sense feeling for heat traces through the fog.
The ability was useful, but in a forest full of life, it was hard to distinguish harmless creatures from real threats.
Ethan remained silent, his calm presence a stark contrast to the tension around him. His eyes moved constantly, missing nothing.
He had his right hand on the hilt of Razor Fang, ready to draw if needed. The faint blue glow of his Phantom Blink knife was visible at his belt, a comforting presence.
They continued for what felt like hours, the oppressive atmosphere wearing on their nerves. The usual sounds of a forest, birds, insects, small animals, were noticeably absent.
Instead, there was only the occasional distant, unidentifiable sound that made the hairs on the back of their necks stand up.
"I really don't like this," Elise murmured, her archer's instincts sensing wrongness in the air itself.
SHOOSH!
The sound was so faint that many didn't notice it at first, a whisper of movement through the air. Then, without warning, one of their rank A hunters was pulled violently into the darkness.
One moment she was there, the next gone, with only a fading cry of surprise.
"Kira!" Jane shouted, instinctively jumping toward where she had disappeared.
"Don't break formation!" Emberlyn commanded, but her warning came too late. Jane had already vanished into the fog, the sound of her footsteps quickly swallowed by the unnatural silence of the forest.
The remaining hunters drew closer together, weapons raised, backs toward each other in a defensive formation. Lucy's hands glowed with the beginnings of a spell, her eyes wide with fear but her posture determined.
SHOOSH!
Again, that terrible whisper of movement. This time, another hunter was the target.
Dren barely had time to draw his weapon before something wrapped around his ankle and yanked him into the darkness. "Help me!" His scream echoed briefly before being cut off.
"Dren!" Elise shouted, her face twisted with horror and rage.
Before she could follow Jane's mistake and chase after him, Emberlyn's voice rang out with unmistakable authority. "Don't chase them! Form a circle, now!"
The remaining hunters quickly obeyed, forming a tight circle with their backs to each other. Torches were raised high, creating a ring of light against the encroaching darkness and fog.
"Damn it! We're losing too many people!" Elise gritted her teeth, frustration and fear clear in her voice as she stared into the thick fog.
