  Chapter 14: Beautiful Creatures.

  ~~~ [START]
  “Aren’t you guys going to the greenhouse or something?”
  “Nah, I’m not going there,” Troy cut Honey’s words, nervously laughing as she raised a brow. “Don’t look at me like that.”
  “Why?” She fixed her bag while flicking her head to the side for her hair to straighten. “Everyone’s going.”
  “Yeah, but I have a job.” He opened his locker. “I heard the trip doesn’t even affect the year mark anyway, so… I’m good.”
  Honey shrugged, faintly yawning under her breath.
  “What are you doing after?” She questioned, stepping closer. “Gina has a gig at a house party tonight. So, since we aren’t coming, let’s go.”
  “Who said I’m not coming?” Troy said, closing his locker. “I said I’m not going on the field trip. Who said I’m not coming to school?”
  Honey smiled while withholding some giggles.
  He sighed, head shaking after his eyes landed on her grin, “What time are we going?”
  “I’ll send you the address; you just have to be there at eight.” She started walking away backward, “And the theme is fairytale.”
  Then she was gone.
  Troy just started walking in the opposite direction, and before he could know it, he had reached the class.
  {MOMENTS LATER}
  “Adrien!”
  “It’s Troy,” Troy corrected a woman, who was possibly one of the most beautiful women he had ever laid his eyes on. Her skin was wrinkled, yet even then, it was evident she was blessed by age.
  “But yo second name, Adrien, Si?” she asked, her Italian accent lurking behind each word.
  “... Yeah, but please call me Troy.”
  The woman nodded, moving to one of the empty canvases, then handed two to Troy, who was seated in the middle of the class.
  “Adrien, we’ve been doing group work, yo know, and lucky for yo di class was uneven before yo got here. But di person yo’re grouping with left for home, dying of sickness.”
  This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.
  She took out a box of paint and brushes from the cardboard, then asked a girl who was seated in front of him to lend him some paint water whenever he needed.
  The woman raised her arms and gestured. “You ever painted before?”
  Troy simply nodded, and she smiled while walking back.
  “Di project is due tomorrow.” She said, writing a title on the board. “Paint what gives yo inspiration, yes.”
  She turned to Troy, who had his hand raised. “Speak, Adrien.”
  “I won’t be in school tomorrow.”
  “Oh, silly boy.” Her arms folded beneath her enormous chest. “Yo’re new. This project was given last week, yo don’t need to submit.”
  {ELSEWHERE}
  In a hallway, where teens moved around like mosquitoes seeking flash.
  “Hey, Gina!” Jessica ran past a crowd of cheerleaders. “Gina!”
  Gina turned at the voice, brow raising.
  “Jessica?...”
  Jessica huffed and puffed when she arrived, sighing while wiping her forehead, mimicking the gesture of drying sweat.
  “Yeah, hey.” She smiled brightly, “How are you—?”
  “Don’t give me that bullshit.” Gina turned, walking away from her.
  “Wait, what?” Jessica tried pulling her by the arm, but Gina shrugged it off.
  “I told you not to talk to me again until that bitch takes down all those school newspaper articles she pulled.” Gina clicked her tongue, but like a leech, Jessica followed behind her.
  “Newspaper… she took those down two years ago.”
  “Well, they’re still up ain’t they?” Gina started walking faster.
  “Come on, Bee.” Jessica ran in front of her, hands raising and stopping her heist.
  But unexpectedly, they landed on her breasts. Gina just narrowed her eyes.
  Jessica pulled away, quirkily, then laughed it off. “Look, Angela unpublished everything the moment you said she should, I promise. The school has three newspaper committees, it’s not us.”
  There was silence for a while, too much, with Gina staring Jessica in the eyes as though measuring her.
  “What do you want?” Gina finally asked.
  Jessica’s smile overwhelmed her, “Two words. An invitation.”
  {ELSEWHERE} {MINUTES LATER}
  “This is nothing.” The art teacher; Mrs Carina, said. Her head shook in disapproval at Troy’s painting, which, for some reason, even after fifty minutes, was empty; completely untouched.
  Troy didn’t even reply to her, his eyes just turned to the brush on his hand, watching the green paint on its tip fall to the floor below him.
  Ever since he learned how to paint, from the memories of his mother, when she painted portraits when he was nothing but a strand of consciousness in the womb. He knew that art was the reflection of one’s true self. Because in a world filled with masks, he believed it was the only way he could show what he truly was.
  The paint was too bright, and its brush wasn’t sharp enough; it seemed like a temptation of lies.
  “Alice will hate me for dis.” Mrs Carina brushed her head in stress.
  Troy’s eyes lifted upward from his seat. “Alice?”
  “Si, she’s di one in your group.” She started walking to her desk. “You need to paint something, Adrien. A brush is just a brush, a canvas is just a canvas. Ever wonder why all those paintings you see in the museums sell for so much?”
  Troy didn’t reply.
  Mrs Carina giggled under her breath, “It’s not the painting, ot di beauty of the drawing Adrien… It’s di soul, di human complexity to see reason in anything. Adrien, your painting shows nothing… It is nothing.
  She took a seat on her desk, too far from Troy, but close enough for everyone in class to hear her every word.
  “Two weeks, Adrien.” She said, smiling. “Show me di soul… or I fail you, yes.”
