Chapter 2 — Patch Notes Were Never Implemented

The first thing I saw after arriving in my fantasy world…

  Was a warning message.

[“This environment may contain unfinished elements.”]

  “…That’s not reassuring,” I said.

  The message vanished immediately.

[“Apologies! That message was marked ‘Remove Before Publication.’’]

I stared into the empty white space.

  “I never published this.”

  [“…Correct. Welcome, Author.”]

  Right.

  Good start.

Another window popped up. It didn’t appear magically.

  It loaded.

There was even a progress bar.

  Initializing Reality… 73%

  “…Why is existence buffering?”

[“You implemented asynchronous world loading to avoid overwhelming new arrivals.”]

“That sounds like something I copied from a game dev blog.”

  The bar reached 100%.

  It stayed there.

  Nothing happened.

  “…Is it done?”

  [“Yes.”]

  “…So why isn’t anything—”

  [“Please click ‘Continue.’’]

  A button appeared.

  I pressed it.

  The universe resumed.

“…I made reality require user input.”

[“You said passive experiences felt unengaging.”]

I need to stop listening to past me.

A mirror appeared for character setup.

  Except the title read:

  “…Placeholder?”

[“You intended to redesign this later.”]

  “Why is it still here?”

  [“You never redesigned it.”]

  That tracked.

  Underneath were sliders.

  Not normal ones.

  Confidence:

  Low ─────────────── High

  Sense of Direction:

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

  Unreliable ──────── Heroic

  Social Energy:

  Needs Nap ───────── Functional

  “…Why are these like this?”

[“You based them on self-reported data.”]

  “…Delete that.”

  [“Cannot. This is core characterization.”]

I sighed and left everything unchanged.

  No point pretending now.

Another box opened, clearly written at 2 a.m.

  ? No violence (Too stressful)

? No unfair systems (Life already has those)

? People should be nice by default

? Economy based on doing good things??? (Refine later)

? Add fun stuff like games and cafés

  ? Figure out transportation (IMPORTANT)

  I froze.

“…Did I seriously leave myself notes inside reality?”

[“You said future-you would appreciate the reminders.”]

  “I hate past-me.”

  A new alert appeared.

[“Transportation system not found. Generating temporary solution.”]

  The ground flickered.

  Then reappeared.

  With a sign.

  [Walking Is Good For You.]

  “…You replaced infrastructure with encouragement?”

  [“You ran out of ideas.”]

  We tried to move on.

A town began rendering in the distance.

Except parts of it visibly popped into place.

  A tree loaded upside down.

  It corrected itself.

  [“Minor aesthetic adjustment.”]

(“Is this what it’s like inside an amateur writer's world?”)

[“You prioritized emotional resonance over technical stability.”]

“That’s writer talk for ‘I had no idea what I was doing.’”

  [“…Yes.”]

  Then came the economy tutorial.

[“You earn Virtue Points by contributing positively to others.”]

  “That part I remember.”

[“However, you did not define conversion rates.”]

  “…What?”

  [“Value is determined contextually.”]

“So how much is helping someone worth?”

  [“It depends.”]

  “On what?”

  [“Narrative satisfaction.”]

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

(“I built an economy powered by vibes.”)

  The world finally opened fully.

  Warm sunlight.

  A peaceful town.

  People smiling.

  Everything gentle.

  Everything welcoming.

  Everything…

Held together by the literary equivalent of duct tape.

[“Initialization complete”] the System announced proudly.

[“Your world is functioning within acceptable narrative tolerances.”]

  “…Define acceptable.”

A roof tile fell off a house.

  Stopped midair.

  Reattached itself.

  [“…Acceptable.”]

I stood there for a long moment.

This wasn’t the flawless paradise I imagined.

It was something much more honest.

A place built by someone who didn’t know what they were doing—

But really, really wanted it to be kind.

  “…Alright,” I said.

I took my first step forward.

“Let’s see how long this draft survives.”
