Post 44: The Surgical Strike

The darkness inside the service tunnel was absolute, a physical weight that pressed against the eyes and made the air feel crowded. It was a throat of concrete and wet rot, exhaling a stagnant breath that tasted of old blood and the dry, dusty musk of insect molting. It was a scent that belonged to the deepest, most forgotten corners of the Heap, places where the decay had been allowed to fester for decades without the interference of the sun.

Mike moved with a blind and practiced confidence, trusting entirely in the blue wireframe grid Valerius had draped over his vision. The tactical overlay mapped the tunnel walls in sharp lines, revealing the jagged edges of rusted pipes and the dangerous silhouettes of collapsed support beams. He saw the world not as a dark void, but as a series of structural calculations and geometric shapes.

Ahead of him, Grim was a thermal ghost, a shifting heat signature of bright orange and deep red that rippled with every powerful stride. The rat moved with a predatory grace that seemed almost alien in such a cramped and filthy environment.

  Contact.

The silence was shattered when the Weaver screamed in his mind.

It was not a sound that could be heard by human ears, but rather a needle driven into the base of his skull, a sharp, jagged spike of sensory data warning of rapid movement directly overhead.

  "Ambush," Valerius stated.

The avatar materialized instantly, a figure of calm blue light standing amidst the filth. He didn't look at Mike, he was looking up, pointing a glowing finger at the shadows of the rafters. "The ceiling, Michael. Reaction time is currently sub-optimal."

The darkness seemed to detach itself from the concrete in three distinct, heavy shapes. They were centipedes, but they were nightmares of biology warped by the toxic sludge of the sector. Each was nearly five feet long, covered in segmented armor the color of bruised meat. Their mandibles dripped with a clear, viscous fluid that hissed when it hit the damp floor.

As they fell, the thermal overlay in Mike’s vision flared, painting the predators in angry shades of yellow and white against the cold, dead blue of the tunnel walls.

The first creature landed with a wet thud directly on the Spitter. The heavy impact knocked the mutated roach onto its side, legs flailing on the slick ground. The centipede didn't hesitate, coiling its long body around the roach like a constrictor, its mandibles scrabbling frantically against the thick chitin to crush the vital acid sac within.

"You will utilize the Surgical Stalker doctrine," Valerius commanded, stepping calmly through the thrashing body of the centipede as if it were smoke. "Isolate the threats. Neutralize them with efficiency. Do not allow your pulse to dictate your movements."

  "Spitter, discharge!" Mike yelled.

His voice cracked in the damp air, echoing down the long passage. He didn't need to speak, the neural tether carried his will instantly, but the shout focused his own rising panic. He forced the command into the insect’s simple, primal brain: Fire.

The throat sac of the Spitter convulsed. A thick spray of caustic green fluid erupted from its mouth at point-blank range, coating the underside of the centipede in a layer of liquid fire. The creature shrieked, a high-pitched, oscillating noise that pierced Mike’s eardrums. White smoke billowed as the acid ate through the soft ventral plating. The predator thrashed away, its many legs tapping a frantic, dying rhythm on the concrete as it tried to outrun the burning.

While the Spitter recovered, the second centipede lunged for Grim. The rat met the charge head-on. Grim caught the insect’s head in his powerful jaws, and Mike heard a sickening crunch as the exoskeleton gave way. But the centipede wasn't finished, its whip-like body lashed around, wrapping dozens of hooking legs around Grim’s muscular torso and squeezing.

The third centipede came directly for Mike.

Time seemed to thicken as the tactical overlay processed the beast. A small, pulsing crimson diamond appeared on the third segment of the creature’s body.

"Target weakness detected," Valerius narrated, his voice floating over the hiss of the monster. "Exoskeleton density is low at this junction. The nerve cluster is exposed."

Mike stepped forward, moving into the creature’s reach. To a scavenger, it was suicide. To Valerius, it was geometry. As the centipede reared back, mandibles opening wide enough to snap a human neck, Mike snapped his right wrist forward.

The Venom-Striker launched itself from his sleeve with the speed of a fired bullet.

It was a blur of obsidian scales and flashing fangs. The mutated viper bit the centipede directly in its cluster of sensory eyes, pumping a concentrated dose of neurotoxin into the creature’s brain. In the blink of an eye, the snake retracted back into the safety of Mike’s sleeve.

The centipede faltered, its movements becoming jerky and uncoordinated as the nerve agent flooded its system.

Mike didn't hesitate. He drove his jagged bone blade, the Venom Spike, upward into the highlighted weak point. The blade bit deep, punching through the joint where the armor plates overlapped. With a roar of exertion, Mike twisted the hilt and ripped the blade sideways, severing the nerve cluster completely.

The creature collapsed into a heap of twitching limbs.

"Grim!" Mike spun around, heart hammering against his ribs.

The rat was rolling on the ground, locked in a death struggle. The centipede had him pinned, legs hooking deep into his hide. Mike reached out with his mind, seizing the consciousness of the Spitter.

  Flank. Saturate.

The cockroach swiveled its turret-like head with mechanical precision. It launched a smaller, precise glob of acid that struck the centipede’s midsection. The armor melted instantly, revealing the pale, pulsing meat beneath.

Grim capitalized with savage intensity. With a powerful shake of his head, he tore the softened section apart, literally ripping the creature in two. Green ichor splattered across the tunnel walls.

Silence returned to the tunnel, broken only by the wet sizzling of acid and the heavy, ragged breathing of the pack. The hunger in Mike’s chest began to roar, a hollow, demanding beast that drowned out the pain of his scratches.

"The biomass has been secured," Valerius noted, gesturing to the steaming carcasses. "You must consume it immediately to stabilize your metabolic rate."

Mike dropped to his knees beside the largest centipede. The meat under the shattered armor was fibrous and leaked a bitter fluid that smelled of copper. He tore into it with bare hands, ignoring the human revulsion, surrendering to the beast the System was building inside him. Grim and the Spitter joined him, the sounds of tearing meat and crunching bone echoing in the dark like a gruesome feast.

As the biomass hit Mike’s stomach, it didn't digest, it integrated. A wave of heat, hotter than the fever that had nearly killed him, roared through his chest. It felt as though his ribs were being crushed and reshaped by an invisible hammer.

  [SKILL UNLOCKED: CHITINOUS PLATING]

Mike gasped for air, dropping the remains of the centipede as a new, terrifying sensation clawed at his extremities. The skin on his forearms and shins began to itch with searing fire. He watched in grim fascination as he pulled up his tattered sleeve.

His flesh was rippling. The skin darkened, thickening with unnatural speed. Grey patches of hard callus fused together, calcifying into thick, overlapping plates that melded seamlessly into his muscle and bone. It was a suit of natural armor, forged from the genetic code of the dead.

Mike ran a trembling finger over the new, ridged growth on his forearm. It felt like cold stone. He flexed his wrist, forcing the calcified spur of his venom barb to slide from his flesh, and tapped the bone point against the grey ridges of the new plating.

  Clack.

The sound was sharp and solid, the sound of steel hitting something just as durable as itself.
