Chapter 2: Uncertainty
This was my chance to find a life I am satisfied with. With no regrets. I’ll have to prove myself.
Katalys seemed skeptical. He reached out his hand.
“Come closer and place your hand on mine.”
As soon as my hand touched his palm, I felt a shock in my hand going towards my chest. It was like we were suddenly connected.”
Katalys’ eyes became filled with hope but also seemed uneasy. As I was about to ask him to stop his worries, he said it before me, determined.
“Agis. What would you say to studying under me, to become a great mage?”
I felt nervous, but I knew what I wanted to do.
“I would be honored to. I’ll try to prove myself and work hard”.
Katalys’ eyes glimmered. He seemed moved.
“Thank you, Agis. I always wanted someone to be my disciple, but I was always too nervous to ask. However, you seemed like you wouldn’t let me down and I was right!”
“I heard what’s happening,” said Dad.
Oh no! Is he not going to allow me to become a mage. I guess it is a bit dangerous. But…!
“I am a bit worried Agis. I am also glad that you have learnt the beauty of nature as I have. So, I feel like the right choice is to let you follow your way in life. Try hard and become a great mage, my son.”
He was clearly moved that I had grown up a bit. Now with my parents’ permission, I was ready to start my journey in magic.
“I promise he will be” said Katalys.
“Mister Katalys, you can stay here as long as you need. It’s our pleasure,” said my mom.
“From tomorrow we start practicing control of magic, so you can learn how to use it”.
We went to rest after dinner.
That night It was hard to fall asleep.
As I closed my eyes, I found myself in the middle of a field. It was pitch dark and the only thing I could see was the dirt below me. I walked a bit and noticed a wolf resting on the ground near me. He looked at me. I didn’t know what to do so I just waited still. I got increasingly worried as time went on, not knowing what the wolf would do. As I was worrying, suddenly I found a gray dog with dark, red eyes near me. He growled at the wolf, and it quickly ran away.

He saved me. As I was focusing on the wolf leaving, I noticed the dog going somewhere and I followed him. We found ourselves in a house like mine that was empty but with one bed. The dog and I laid on the bed and thanks to his company, I felt like I could sleep safely.
It was the next morning. Apparently, I had a similar dream once again but this time thanks to that gray dog – I couldn’t exactly what color it was because it was so dark around us – I was saved. This unusual event probably means I am doing something different than usual.
As I went to find the others for breakfast. I saw mister Katalys using his staff outside. He was using wind magic guiding the wind around in circular motions. He used it so effortlessly and moved so smoothly it was like he was born knowing how to use magic. It was truly a spectacle to behold.
I went outside exited.
“Master, Master” This is how I am addressing Katalys from now on.
“Is it time already?”
Katalys put on a worried look.
“Agis, there’s no rush! We can work on magic all day! It will be hard in the beginning, but I am sure you will quickly get the hang of it”
“For the first stage of training, we need you to become able to use magic.” Katalys explained.
I was elated to be doing something so interesting. When Katalys summoned that flame yesterday, my heart was pounding with excitement at the thought of being able to do something like that. I tried understanding it so I could get Katalys to teach me. And finally, it was time to try doing it myself.
“Put your hand out like this. I’ll place mine on your back so I can monitor your flow of magic. Now, you need to focus on a point at the center of your palm. Try thinking of pulling it backwards towards the inside of your hand. Now, try thinking of pushing it outwards, away from the inside of your hand. Keep focusing on pushing it away from the point on your hand,” Katalys said with anticipation.
“And now try doing it with more intensity.”
As I increased how much I thought of pushing, my back felt lighter. Suddenly, I felt the same spark I had felt when I touched his palm, this time on my back where Katalys’ palm was placed.
“Incredible”! I thought. I could do something this amazing on my own!
“Alright.” Said Katalys.
“Today we will practice drawing magic into and out of your arm, so you can get used to the sensation and become able to use it quickly without needing to focus for long’
So we practiced this that day and the day after.
“Unfortunately, we’ll need some of the special books I have back in my Laboratory to even make it possible for Agis to reach Advanced level magic.”
After I heard that, I got excited but also, my heart wrenched a bit with anxiety. I then noticed my parents’ worried stares at Katalys and me.
“…Okay we Understand. Agis, this is the first time in a while I’ve seen you so excited to live life. And I feel like we can trust mister Katalys, after all we have spent some time together and we feel he really is great as a person and as a mage. We will let you guide Agis to the right path in life, as long as you two visit us occasionally!”
I felt relieved and glad that my parents understood my situation and supported my dreams.
We spent the next day preparing for the journey. We also practiced basic magic again when we were resting.
The storms seemed to have stopped so it’s a good opportunity to go right now, we thought the following morning
I hesitantly at first readied up to leave, and after reconsidering everything, I confidently left the door of our house. I was ready to grow up. I promised I will become a proper mage after all.
It was time for my new life to start getting into motion!
