Prey

Yawning and sitting up, I shake off the feeling of deja vu. Not sure where it came from, but whatever.

Climbing out of bed, I rub my eyes and throw on some clothes suitable for work. Some shorts and a nice apron is good.

As I brush my teeth, I make a mental list of things I need to do today. Though I can’t help but find it weirdly quiet.

Guess I woke up extra early.

Finishing cleaning up, doing my hair into a couple of pig tails, I head out into the kitchen to start cooking up food.

“Gotta beat the early morning rush, of course.”

Blinking at a sudden feeling of deja vu, I shake my head again. “God, too many of those lately. Maybe I need more sleep?”

Ignoring the feeling, I quickly get some breakfast sandwiches made, all like what the regulars want.

Glancing to my right, I grab the pepper off the counter, humming as I add the seasoning, and some others, to the eggs I’m making.

And of course, gotta do it all with the proper timing. Just the smell tells me when it’s ready, and I place it on a plate. Perfect eggs-

Hearing the chime of the front door opening tells me it's right on time. Walking to the dining room through the door connecting it and the kitchen, I greet the customer cheerfully.

It feels a little odd for some reason, but it’s quickly done and I serve him his breakfast, waving as I quickly get lost in the morning rush…

A bit after lunch, I’m enjoying myself a cup of hot tea and a pancake. Perfect.

Well… no, it’s not. It feels oddly… empty. Why? What’s missing?

Looking around with a sudden somber mood, I can’t put my claw on it… oh, duh. How could I forget?

Grabbing some syrup and dousing my pancake in it really adds the final touch I need.

As I munch, the feeling doesn’t fade, and it feels like there’s a… smell missing maybe… but I can’t dwell on it too long, I need to keep working. Though it’s way more hectic than it has any right to be.

If only I had a second pair of hands for this. Maybe I could hire a helper or something.

The thought stirs something in me, but I can’t tell what.

‘Maybe adoption is a good idea? Could always adopt a stray kit, I guess. Would I really be a good mom though? Ugh, god I’m not old enough to be a mom, nevermind.’

  …

Finishing up not too long after, I go and take a nice bath, soaking into the tub and relaxing.

Sinking into it feels so satisfying, the warm water covering my hips, chest, and then neck all easily, and I could even go completely under if I felt like it.

  “Nyah~ amazing~”

Finally, I feel a bit more relaxed, my muscles untensing in the water. I know cats don’t usually like baths, but I love them.

Looking down at my chest, I can’t help the feelings of being jealous of… people with bigger ones. I’m so petite, customers mistake me for a kid sometimes! Like, I’m clearly an adult if I’m working and owning a cafe, you goomba.

“Eh, whatever. They just can’t appreciate my uniqueness.” Chuckling to myself at how stupid that sounds, I climb out the tub and dry off, dressing in pajamas and flopping into bed in my room, looking up at the TV in it, seeing myself laying in bed.

Hm… why do I feel so… longing? What’s wrong with me?

Climbing out of bed, I rub my eyes and throw on some clothes suitable for work. Some shorts and a white shirt are good.

As I brush my teeth, I make sure not to glance at any mirrors, all of them covered by cloths now to make sure I don’t look at them.

‘Huh, why use cloths? Couldn’t I just… eh whatever, I’m sure it doesn’t matter. I’ve got more important things to worry about.’

Finishing cleaning up, doing my hair into a couple of pig tails, I head out into the kitchen to start cooking up food.

Grabbing some sugar and dunking a spoonful into my tea, I spit on its much sweeter taste.

As I drink, the feeling doesn’t fade… but I can’t dwell on it too long, I need to keep working. Though it’s a bit more hectic than it usually is.

Finishing up not too long after, I go and take a shower, my tired muscles relaxing in the running warmth.

“God, I’ve needed this. I just feel so tense and exhausted, like I just worked a double shift.”

Getting out of the shower and heading to my room, I dress in some pajamas and plop into bed. Looking up at the TV, I see myself laying in bed, the reflection staring back at me with…

  ‘...is it… smiling at me-’

As I brush my teeth, I make sure not to glance at any mirrors, all of them covered by cloths now to make sure I don’t look at them.

‘Hm, wonder what I should get next. Maybe some new speakers? My tv’s built in ones suck.’

Finishing cleaning up, I head out into the kitchen to start cooking up food.

Ignoring the feeling of deja vu, I quickly get some breakfast sandwiches made, all like what the regulars want.

Glancing to my right, I grab the pepper off the counter and brush my hand against a frame, humming as I add the seasoning, and some others, to the eggs I’m making-

  ‘Wait, what was that?’

Confused, I look to my right, seeing… a photo there of three people. One is clearly me, but next to me are… two people. A tall busty neko, with blond hair and amber eyes, with an equally as tall woman next to her and I, with long black hair and sharp red eyes, chrome clear along her arms and legs.

“What… When did I… ever take that picture? Who… who is tha-”
